Today I was backing out of my driveway and when I started to turn my steering wheel I heard a semi-loud pop noise and then I could barely turn the steering wheel at all. After a few minutes of cusing and trying to get my freakin car out of the middle of the road I was able to get the steering wheel to turn. It turned very freely like there was no problem at all, except the wheels don't turn one bit. I can turn the steering wheel in full revolutions and the wheels do nothing at all. Any ideas? I figure it must be the steering box or the steering shaft because there was no leaking upto now and the steering wheel still turns fine. Also leading up to this problem the steering was getting loose and I do rember hearing similar pop noises when turning very sharply.

This could be something in the steering column or the rack and pinion. __________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Power steering pump I think. Possibly some kinda leak along the PS line, did you check the fluid levels?
I've never heard about steering racks or rack and pinion systems on these cars just giving out like that.
Start simple, check out the fluid, pump and work from there.

There was no leaks at all before this happend. After it happend I could see a few drips right under the steering box. The fluid levels were fine. And even if the pump was gone wouldn't it just be really hard to turn the steering wheel but the wheels would still turn? I mean isn't that the point of power steering to make it easier to steer your car?

There's something broken in the steering column or in the R&P. If the P/S pump were bad, you could still turn the front wheels, but it would be hard to do that with no hydraulic assist. ________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Power steering going out would make it very hard to turn. It would not disconnect the steering wheel from the wheels. Something serious has happened...

Hey everyone, I had my car towed to a local mechanic today and it took 4 people to get the wheels turned enough to get it on the tow truck. As soon as we started to turn the wheels manually, all the P/S fluid came gushing out. Anyway the machanic said the Rack & pinion assembly was snaped. The part was going to be 588.00 and the labor was about 325.00, he thought the part was kind of high so he called the dealer to see how much they sold it for and it was 900.00. Well I called the local Advanced Auto Parts store and they had it for 298.00. So I called the machanic back and he said to bring him the part and he'll put it in. Worked out pretty good. Oh yeah there was also two bolts that were broken off so the machanic will have to bore out the holes. The total job will be about 650.00 thats alot better then 913.00 though.
