You have a 95 right?
Are you aware that the 95 oil dipstick is labeled wrong. It take 7.5 quarts of oil, I don't know where that would read on the dipstick though.
It also might be an oil level sensor (maybe I'm making that up).

The dipstick would cause you to overfill the crankcase instead of underfill. It is too short, not too long.
The only options are the oil level sensor or the connector to the sensor. The oil level sensor is located in the side of the oil pan towards the front of the vehicle. Make sure that the connector is plugged in tightly. Try wiggling the wires and see if the problem gets worse or stays the same. Try hosing out the connector and contacts with WD40. With the oil leak that these engines can have, the sensor body, connector and wire can get pretty coverd up with leaking oil. It's not supposed to get into the connector housing, but it won't hurt to make sure that the contacts are clean.

Yep another silly underlooked thing by GM. Sigh. They designed a great oil drain system, but fudged the dipstick. I had my shop fill with 7 quarts of oil, not 7.5.
