Hey everyone, Taking another road trip across the country. Starting in Tucson, AZ and working my way up to Maine and then back to Tucson. Heres the actual map if you want to check out the route! tinyurl.com/36jerh6I have one question, my girlfriend likes to cut it close when it comes to gas, I have a two gallon gas canister, would it be safe to keep it in the trunk? Other than that the car is just about ready to go. Just have to do the fine turning next weekend. The trip starts Monday July 19th and we hope to be back in Arizona by August 6th. The car will have well over 230,000 miles once were done!! Wish me luck, I'll keep this updated for those of you who wish to follow.

"cutting it close" with fuel is VERY hard on fuel pumps. I wouldn't be "cutting it close" if it were my car. I would start looking for gas stations around 1/4 tank level.

^^ Plus, the "miles remaining" indicator on the Aurora DIC is not always terribly accurate. Of course at nearly 230k you are probably well aware of how far you can push the limits before fueling up. But as soon as you get the "ding ding ding" low fuel warning, I'd be looking for a gas station.
Hope the trip is going well!

So I'm still alive. I made it from Arizona to Maine and back to Arizona. Had many problems on day one. Ranged from the tensioner pulley seizing to lots of overheating. Overheating was solved by taking the thermostat out on the side of the road, rest had to be done at a garage. Other than the first day and a half, trip went real smooth. Came in under budget and got to see many cool places. The car now sits at 236,000 miles and is still running. Overall would do it again!

sounds like a fun trip, wife and I used to do stuff like that, but there never seems to be time lately
Did you start with a specific itinerary? Some of the best trips we ever took had a destination, but no firm plans on how, or when to arrive.

At least the problems happened early while close to home. Just goes to show, almost 1/4 million miles and still ready for the road.

Sounds like a really fun trip. Sure wish I had the time and money to do a similar trip.
Maybe we can learn from your tensioner experience......The pulleys are cheap ($12 at Rockauto), although not really easy to replace. Just changed mine and it was dead man walking at 128,000 miles.....

We knew the main places we wanted to see like Grand Canyon, St. Louis on the way to Maine. Then on the way back Chicago, Mt Rushmore, and Denver. But we also stopped at other places that we never planned on. Guess thats what makes a road trip fun. As far as costs, it was $361 to get to Maine and $342 to get back. Split between my girlfriend and I, it was much cheaper to drive then to get plane tickets. Plus I had my little sister for the first part so she would have cost more if we flew. As far as the tensioner pulley, dont know much about it. The car had to be towed and I didnt get it back until late the next day. At that point I was just real frustrated and just paid it and left. I have the bill someplace at home. I will look it up and see exactly what was fixed because it was a few things.
