The craziest thing I've ever seen in my life happened yesterday. I had just dropped my little brother off downtown about 20 minutes away. I just got off the highway and was 2 minutes from home. I was driving about 50 mph when it happened. I heard a crack and than a pop and I felt the front of my car drop a little bit. I pulled over and the tire was flat. This was a brand new tire so I was kind of pissed, I thought it blew out.
I took the wheel off to put the donut on and while I was doing that I noticed that my rim had hit the caliper a few times taking a few chunks out of my spokes and the caliper. When I got the wheel off finally my mind was blown.
The disk part of my rotor broke off from the part that was on the hub. Not only that but my caliper bracket was detached from the knuckle at the top, I looked closer and noticed that it pulled the bolt right out of the knuckle sideways so the knuckle is also broken. As for how my tire was flat, I don't know exactly what did what but there was gouges on the inside that I could only describe as looking like Wolverine took a claw to it. And there was a hole the size of a bullet hole on the inside of my rim. There tire on the other hand is just fine.
So I'm wondering how on earth something like this could of happened. I changed my rotors only a year ago and don't understand how a solid piece of metal could just break apart when I wasn't even hitting the brake. My mechanic had replaced the wheel hub on that side only a few weeks ago. A few weeks before that I had my alternator replaced and my calipers done as they would freeze up sometimes before. Maybe the excess heat from when they used to stick had weakened them? Very shocked by this. If it had happened 2 minutes earlier I would have been on the highway.
