Some unsettling news but I'm giving it anyhow because I don't want others to go through what I'm going through right now. If you have pets over let's say 7 -8 yrs old; make sure they get a blood test done with their annual checkup. I had to put Inca, my rat terrier, to sleep yesterday. It likely started last year but who knows. Over the winter she was losing some weight and not eating well, however she seemed her normal self, always running around and happy. Then last week she just stopped eating regular dog food completely. I was able to get her to eat treats and human food table scraps. That went on for several days, she seemed fine just not eating right. Then she also stopped eating treats and human food too.
I took her to the vet and they did a blood test and apparently she had kidney disease for who knows how many years but it was gradual in that her kidneys weren't eleminating phosphurus and her creitien levels were down. Once they get far enough out of whack it will cause renal failure. I did what any loving person would do for their best friend. She was on a doggie version of kidney dialysis for 48 hours to flush her system and reset it so to speak. I felt sure she would be ok because this all came on so fast but after 48 hours on a drip she got even worse until her phosphurus was literally off of the chart.
I spent nearly my whole paycheck on vets trying to get her back to somewhat normal but yesterday morning after completing her treatment the last bloodtest confirmed that her little kidneys had completely shut down because her levels had got even worse (much worse) and I went to see her before school and she was obviously in great pain. They also confirmed that the phosphurus and other levels had given her multiple stomach and intestine ulcers. All of our systems work together you know. I couldn't bare to see her in pain any longer and she had no chance of survival so I had to make that tough call and have her put to sleep and buried her in the corner of my yard yesterday afternoon.
She lived 10 years and 30 days from the date of my brain trauma life changing event. She was an official service dog for me. Inca was not a "working" service dog and she was sort of retired since I've made such progress with my own situation since my accident. So believe it or not my doctor got it all taken care of years ago that she was a therapy dog for me. I could have her in apts. that did not allow pets, etc. What does that mean? Well she made me laugh and brought me joy at a time when almost all my friends left me, my wife left me, I lost my job due to not able to work, I had to sell my mustang, my truck, my ninja, and my house to pay hospital bills and frankly was not suicidal but a danger to myself and others nonetheless.
Bottom line - if you love your pet get a simple blood test ($45-$65) annually when they get older. It could save their life and much heartache for you.
RIP Inca
