Last week, after my '01 4.0 sat for a couple of days, I noticed after starting I get the message "Check Gas Cap". I had been having a bit of trouble removing and reattaching the cap lately, so I purchased a new cap from the Chevy dealership nearby. I still get the message, so I decided to clean around the opening with rough sandpaper to make sure that I was getting a good seal. My problem still exist although I can clear it on the DIC. What am I missing here? Has anyone had this problem? I need help.

You might have an evap leak somewhere else in the system. IIRC the car senses that the gas cap is off through a pressure sensor that measures the pressure in the tank.

The check gas cap is like Check Engine light but it shows msg on the dic. You need to try to reset the code with the tool or it should reset it self in few days if everything is good.

My car has a different issue. When I go to the pump, I have to pump at like 50% to 70% flow, or else the pump shuts off. It's annoying.

98redaurora you might need to replace canister close valve and/or vent valve . The tank is not venting properly
