I have an oil leak somewhere under the front valve cover. I'm hoping maybe head gasket? coil packs out, eight valve cover bolt out, end with water pump pulley will not come up. If the pulley has to come off, any ideas without breaking the plastic pulley? Thanks for any help. Not ready to dump the Aurora yet.

Hey Zeb, welcome to the club!
4.0, I assume? Yep, pull the pulley (very carefully), also cam seal should be replaced. Good luck!!

You have to use a pulley puller/power steering pulley puller, they have them for rent at local parts stores or cheap at harbor freight. Water pump pulley remover.

Have a buddy that has the special puller to so I will give it a shot. I'm trying to get in far enough to see where all the oil is coming from. I have been told that if I have to pull the head that I may encounter problems with head bolts breaking off or threads stripping out? Any experience pulling head? Or am I crazy to try? Thanks Again!

I'm going to give it a shot this weekend. I assume once the pulley is off I will be able to slide the cover over the shaft and off. Then on to the head bolts, that I have been told can be a nightmare? Thanks again!

Haha, ZERO experience, first N* I've ever owned! But the horror stories are true. You can do inserts or studs, or both, if need be. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and saving all that for a 4.6 swap. Let us know how it goes!

You have to use the puller type that I linked, other types will just break your pulley, $500 Mac pulley puller kit will not remove it.
If you pull you head bolts your threads tear out of the block with the bolts, there is no problem with bolts breaking off. You would then need to remove your engine to drill and tap every head bolt hole and use studs or inserts.

Now that I see that my 2001 4.0 engine has hole in block and letting a lot of oil out, I'm thinking more about the rebuilt option. Does anyone know if there is a place where you could buy a rebuilt 4.0 N* that has the head bolt threads already replaced. Thanks

There is a thread on here about a 4.6 transplant if you are feeling super gutsy.
