Steering wheel controls - 3 out of the 4 lights that lit the controls are burned. Any procedure on how to remove these controls - looks like the bezel around the controls are snapped into the steering? Would want to know before I start prying the thing off...

I know there is a write-up around here somewhere, I just can't find a working link! I believe you just pop the assembly out with a flat blade though! Might want to get the interior nice and warm first if you are in a cold climate. Let that plastic warm up a little.

Thanks. Was looking after that writeup but (as you mention) the link is broken.

I'd sure like some detailed info on how/where to pry the steering wheel switches out. I hate cars with broken tabs & loose trim pieces!

On the bottom of the wheel control trim stick a flat he'd screwdriver in there to get it started. Once you can get your fingers in there pull out at up with gentle, steady pressure. On the airbag side of the trim there is a little tab that runs the length of the assembly which keeps it tight in place. You will think you are going to break it.
I've taken mine in and out many times. No problem so far. There are no metal clips or plastic clips that hold it to the steering wheel that will break.

When you say bottom of the switch trim which end do you mean- the long end that extends down near my cruise control lever, or the short end at the top of the wheel? I've tried both and it does feel like it's going to break.

OK I guess it's time to stop being so cautious :-) It's just that the steering wheel is SO visible...

Give it a wiggle and a jiggle while lifting up and out. I would go shoot a quick video but my car has been sitting out in the cold since this AM and don't want to risk breaking the plastic. If you are still having troubles I will let the car warm up on the drive home and get a video then.

Got it out... turns out that's the easy part. I've been soldering for 40 years and those tiny bulb wires surface-mounted to tiny pads under the plastic bulb holder was the worst ever.

I forgot to mention...I couldn't solder the new bulbs in with them inserted in the little plastic holders because the leads wrap UNDER the holder to the pcb pads. So I left off the holders. I don't think the bulbs need protection. Also those little blue condoms on the bulbs were fused to the bulb and tore no matter how careful I was in removing them. Luckily I have a donor radio I previously used and it's got lots of those same bulbs/condoms. It took me 5 attempts to replace 2 bulbs and on one I ended up just layering 2 ripped condoms--offset to cover the gaps.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread.
2nd gen question still.
Is the back shell of the steering wheel removable to the point that the Cruise Control paddle and switch can be replaced? The wheel would stay in place and won't need to be removed, right?
