Just discovered my fuel tank is leaking fuel. Metal lock ring around fuel pump looks very rusty. I'm assuming the metal lock ring tabs are rusty as well. Is there a way to install the fuel pump without the lock ring or do I have to find a fuel tank in a junk yard that isn't rusty? I live in New England so this will be hard to do.

I think the tank is made of plastic, not sure the tabs on the tank would be rusted (unless the tabs are metal). You can get a new lock ring on rockauto.com $3 to $7. Do you know where the leak is on the tank?

Tank tabs are metal, tank is plastic. Rust penetrator around the lock ring and tabs several times a day, wire brush clean, repeat. Tap with brass punch, buy the GM tool or adapter a 3 prong oil filter wrench. Replacing the tank requires dropping the entire rear subframe. You can remove the seat back and work from the cabin instead of crawling in the trunk.

I don't think the metal tabs are going to be usable. I'll need to replace the tank. Friend of mine owns a repair shop with a car lift. Him & I can't get it done in half a day I'm thinking. Has anyone on here done this? Do I need to remove the exhaust before I drop the rear suspension? Am I going to have a hard time dropping the rear suspension? Seized bolts that will snap when I put a air wrench on them?

Yeah four bolts on the cat flange and hangers to remove the entire exhaust. I am sure some stuff will be rusty. If the ring and locking tabs are that far gone then removing the pump should be pretty easy I would think. Many people have fabricated ways to hold the pump in place.

"Many people have fabricated ways to hold the pump in place" It would be good to know how people have done this. Only thing I can think of is to make a metal ring and rivet it on.

Basically yes. If you search you will find them. I don't have time at the moment to look them up. Aluminum would be ideal or a solvent resistant plastic. I am sure someone could come up with a good replacement design and some nice aluminum ones CNCd for a good fit.
