Hello all. The fuel pump on my 2001 went out. I read somewhere that I need to empty the tank before changing it. Why would that need to be done if you can access the pump through the trunk? the tank has about 10 gallons of fuel in it.
Also, does anyone have any tips or tricks? Thanks all Dan

It doesn't have to be empty, just not overly full. The entire process is outlined in this thread with video how-to's aurorah.proboards.com/thread/15608Only difference is you'll just be swapping in a new assembly. If you've worked on cars before I'd put the difficulty of this at about a 3. Simple stuff as long as your lock ring isn't rust-welded on.

My current Aurora hasn't been in a shop the 4 years I've owned it. AC Compressor, Radiator, Plugs and Wires, Brakes, Rear Shocks. I bet all that was done for under a grand. Good luck getting that rate at a shop haha.

Even if it's not rust-welded, it's an ex-wife level *****. I ended up paying a mechanic because I just couldn't get it to move. Causes me physical pain to this day, because the rest of the procedure could be done by a two-year-old.
One tip I have--don't go Airtex. I've heard a whole song-and-dance about how they now have lifetime warranties and come with the correct pigtail. I've also heard about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and honest politicians.

I got mine off in about 3 mins (as in using the method he shows to take off the ring that's how long it took). I agree with the Airtex pumps though. That's what I put in at first and it was so noisy I could hear it 5 feet behind the car. Swapped that sucker out immediately.

Thanks for the advice. If I cant get the ring off my landlord can. At times I can be a "bigger hammer" kind of guy. He likes to take his time and do it right. Its going to be at least 10 days before I can get to it. Good idea to soak the ring in penetrating oil?

my 01's fuel sending unit is bad when it gets to 1/8 tank it goes hay wire..
should i just replace the sending unit or go with a whole assembly, the pump still works fine
also are the 40-60$ ones on the e bay worth a damn?

I'd go for just the sending unit.

Unfortunately I can't open eBay links at work haha I think the part number may be in the video's in the repair thread. You may want to make sure that matches.
