My '01 4.0 is in need of a catalytic converter (225k). I've checked and can replace with a new one for about $200. (rock auto) Was wondering if it would be OK to pick up a used one from a salvage yard, and if so, is there a difference between the 3.5 and the 4.0. At this point I would like to keep the expense as low as possible. Haven't checked but what would a reasonable price be from the yard or am I just asking for trouble going this route?

It is illegal for salvage yards to sell used catalytic converters and also for you to install a used one technically.

if u have issue with ur mufflers rusting out i would buy whole assembly cat with the new mufflers and pipes its comes out cheaper in long run then replacing cat and then replacing mufflers later .

Get the new Walker from Rock Auto and make sure to use the 5% discount. Take your old catalytic converter to the junk yard and you may get around $100 for it, maybe more. There's precious metals in catalytic convertors and the OEM converters are worth pretty good money, even when shot.
A lot of people aren't aware of this.
Good luck.

The market fluctuates, but I've gotten $90-110 for OEM convertors. Let us know what you get.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I didn't know you could get money for old catalytic converts. They contain platinum, copper, nickel, palladium, rhodium among other things. Around my area they'll go under your car in commuter lots and cut off your cat with a battery powered sawzall so they can scrap 'em. Kind of a rude awakening when you first start your car.

Yeah not here but nearby cities it is a problem. If you drive a brodozer or anything easy enough to crawl under beware. Easy access. Easy money for heroin or meth. Not all vehicles have cats under them though but right off the manifold/s.

Yeah I scrapped my Auroras pluggished cat and got nearly 100 here in Idaho even! I replaced it with a Flow Monster replacement high flow cat. Works great!

Not yet, waiting for my tax return to get a few other things done as well. I'm getting tired of looking at that check engine light though

You mentioned the check engine light, Are you sure it is the converter. A misfire will often cause a similar code. I have seen others replace good converters that were simply could not clean up a poorly running engine. The replacement may not be able to handle that as well for long. As far as gutting the internals,I am not sure the newer monitoring systems would tolerate that. The post converter OX sensor would go crazy. Original equipment converters are valuable and I have gotten ~$50to 70 for them, a scrap aftermarket one just $5 to 10. Scrap today is not worth what it was a couple of years ago. I think most yards grab them off their new arrivals to get the value out of them. My local yards do not leave them on any cars. I would not be in a rush to scrap a good original. Rich

I have a new CAT for sale $45. Installed one on my 2002 Aurora and it works great. Check AP Exhaust systems web site to see if this fits your application, p/n 608266. 2 1/2 inlet, 2 1/2 outlet, bung fitting for O2 sensor.

I'm interested in your catalytic converter. Is it for the 3.5 or 4.0. I didn't find the p/n.

As this is a Universal Cat, it will fit most any vehicle.
My 2002 Aurora is the 4.0L, and it works very well.

mybaby, shipping cost looks to be around $18.75 for this item.
Yes, I do have Paypal account.
You live near Fort Wayne right?
We will be camping at the Pokagon state park in Angola, Indiana for Memorial weekend.
We could meet in between or something to save on shipping?
