My '01 has started pulling to the left on braking. It feels like something is shifting in the suspension - sometimes the "shift" holds even after I let go of the brakes, and will suddenly shift back maybe 30 seconds later.
Jacking the front wheels up shows no indications of anything being loose - it feels a little like it did when I had a bad tie rod end, but there seems to be no play in anything.
Could the control arms be loose without being visible when rocking the wheels? The subframe bushings?
Anybody run into anything like this?

I replaced the front calipers after this started, thinking the same thing. No change. Could the rear calipers cause this behavior?
When I brake, if I brake softly it's fine, but as I increase pressure on the pedal it hits a point where it's like something suddenly "shifts" and I have to compensate with the steering wheel. Let go of the brakes and it "shifts" back, occasionally with a delay.

Just to follow up on this, the problem got worse and I could find no indications of brake problems. I took it to a mechanic friend's shop so he could put it on a lift and see what was going on. As it turns out the frame had rotted in the back and the right rear suspension had actually broken loose, so the rear suspension was in fact shifting on braking. Not very safe, to say the least.
I unfortunately had to retire it.

Oh snap. Any plans down the road to fabricate something to make it safe?

Sounds a lot like what happened to my old Taurus. Would pull when braking, thought it was a caliper, turned out to be a rotted out sub-frame mount. That killed that car too.
