Hi. So my car burns a lot of oil, and I usually use 10w-40 in the summer, and I use 0w-40 at the beginning of winter, but half way through winter, when its colder, i use 5w-30 because its cheaper and I need a lot of it.
Can I use SAE 50? I mean, I dont want to use oil thats too thick and will cause pressure issues. I could also get 20w-50 if that would be any better(but I dont think it would?)

The owner's manual says not to use 20W-50. 50W is much thicker than that, so that can't be used either. See the page from the owner's manual about that...................

I wouldn't, I don't even really like going above 10w-30 so the thought of 50 scares me haha.

RCA, I think you got your oil terminology backwards. 10-30 would be better during the summer than 5w-30, keeps the oil from getting too thin at the higher temps than 5w.

I've heard of some people running 10w40 in Northstars as they age to reduce consumption, but never any thicker. Are you burning oil or leaking oil? If you are burning, you could try some hard runs to clear up carbon and maybe get a better seal on the rings. Run it close to redline in 2nd, let it engine brake at high rpm down quite a bit and floor again and repeat. Just make sure your engine and tranny are up for it.
Also, you could try switching to a high mileage oil. I've had some success with reducing consumption on other vehicles.

Hi. So my car burns a lot of oil... Well, how much is "a lot" converted to quarts per month or quarts per 1000 miles? If you are using (not losing/leaking) more than 1 quart in 1000 miles, a higher viscosity oil won't help much. And you will lose a couple MPG, so double whammy. And I'll concur, nothing higher than 10W-40...

I burn a lot. No leaks. Like a quart every 800 miles.

I don't recall mentioning 5w-30 lol. What I'm saying is, I wouldn't want to go much thicker than 10w-30 (which is what I usually use) in summer.

The last number 30 is the hot flow number. When the 10W30 oil and 5W30 are at temp they are the same around the same viscosity. 10W30 doesn't protect any better then 5W30 if the engine was designed for 5W30.

The W in 5W30, 10W30, etc. stands for "winter".
