Okay, that MIGHT be exaggerating a little... this morning when I was in the drive through, I started to hear a rattle that sounded like the exhaust was rattling some. Okay, no big deal. I pulled up to the pump at the gas station, popped the hood and got out. That rattle suddenly sounded more like tap-tap-tap from the motor!
Killed the car, measured the oil. No problem there. Fired her back up, uh oh.... tap-tap-tap again. Then it went away. Then tap-tap-tap AGAIN. At that point I figured out that it wasnt internal. It was from the water pump side... turns out that the tensioner is knocking around now. I could see the back side moving and tapping in rhythm of the noise I was hearing.
So there it is, one of the best ways to wake up! Tapping noises from the engine with only 105k miles.

Haha, just wait until your smog pump bearing starts going out. Mine sounded like a jet turbine spooling up!

I was going to guess AC compressor clutch No. Other side of the motor. Still a fun noise. I'm going to fix it this weekend and its slowly getting louder as I drive during the week.

At least its an easy fix and you have a good ear. When mine tossed the waterpump belt I was going 65. I think it had maybe a mile before that needle started climbing and I shut her off. Be careful. Heat is a good way to age a motor.

Grrrr..... well, while it was obvious that the tensioner needed to be changed, it's not the issue. Knocking is still there. I guess that I'm gonna have to go water pump now.

Knocking is still there. I guess that I'm gonna have to go water pump now. Hate to hear that! You can confirm by taking the tension off of the belt while it's running (or just remove the belt). Don't know what else it could be though. GL
