Hello everyone I am a new owner of a 97 Aurora 4.0 with 151k. The car was my sister's for many years and has recently been in a hit and run so I saved it from the junkyard for 150$. The damage is not the problem the car still drives but has no heat, none at all, very cold air only. It is very cold outside and it feels like outside air only coming from the heater. The heater core was replaced a few months ago and she says it didn't help. She just stopped driving it in the winter. The temp gauge shows the engine is hot, the coolant in the reservoir is hot so I think it is circulating but I took the cap off while hot and didn't hear any pressure release. After a day of googling this issue I am thinking it is the heater control valve but I can't find anything that shows me where it is located. I can't even find the core hoses from above, do I need to get under the car to find the hoses and the control valve? Also I have read the car should have dexcool and it has been replaced with green coolant. I have my doubts that this is causing the problem but this is a "special" engine I don't know much about other than I probably don't want to fix it myself. My problem is I feel like I can fix almost anything myself lol Sorry for getting long winded

Don't apologize, the more details the better!
Have you checked the temp valve actuators (blend door actuators) at the heater box?

I second tigger's suggestion. I would see if the actuators in the dash are functioning. Maybe with the engine off and key on, blower on the lowest speed, cycle between the max and min on the temp and listen if you hear any audible change. You could also remove the lower kick panel and look at them while you do it but I'm not sure the one that controls temp would be visible like the other two are. Been awhile since I've been in there.
You can see the heater hoses at the firewall from the top but they're really far back there. When I changed them I had to remove the coilpacks, cruise control, etc etc to even get a hand on them and even then it was tight. You can run green coolant without a problem as long as a proper flush is done beforehand.

Ok new update I can hear the actuators moving when I switch from 60 to 90 degrees. The passenger side seems to be working fine, blowing hot air to cold air. The odd thing is the driver's side. It does warm up a little when moving from 60 to 90. 60 is blowing very cold air and it does warm up a little when changed to 90 degrees. But nothing like the warm air on the passenger side.
Do you think the actuator is not moving enough or maybe the door is jammed or broken? I assume there are two doors, one for each side. I have not taken any panels off yet to visually see what is happening if you can even see the actuator move but it does sound like the actuator is moving a good distance. Can hear it for about 3 seconds or more.
Good news is the heater core is not plugged and the coolant is circulating through it.
Could I just pull the actuator and manually move the door for winter and summer? It's a junkyard car if things start to cost me too much, and I haven't even addressed the damage issues yet

Another update I got upside down under the dash (sucks). All actuators looked to be working fine. Took #5 off to make sure it works. It does work. I put pressure on he part that turns the blend door and I could not stop it from turning. I didn't try real hard but hard enough to tell the gears are fine.
The blend door does have a section sticking out of the box that the actuator attaches to. I grabbed it and it was kinda hard to turn but I turned it and now I have heat on the driver's side again. I assume it should be easier to turn than it was but for anyone looking for a cheap fix to this problem. You can manually switch the blend door to hot or cold. Possibly with a flat screwdriver on the actuator if you know the actuator is bad anyway but taking it off is not difficult since you're upside down in the dash either way.
I will try some wd-40 and see if I can loosen up the door a bit and I think the actuator will work again.
Thank you for that diagram link it was a life saver especially since they all looked like they are working properly, I knew which one to pull first

I was going to confirm that you could change them by hand (sorry for the late reply) but I'm glad you already figured that out. I think I may have a similar problem in mine so let me know if the WD-40 helps, I may have to do the same.

I can't say that it worked but it did feel like it was moving a little easier. I couldn't get the actuator back on, I'm not sure why but it didn't want to slide back on the door. I gave up trying, it was snowing on my legs sticking out the door lol. I will try to reattach it again when I want cold air.
Now the hammering begins to try to get the taillight back in where it can be seen. It was hit on the driver's rear while parked along side the road. Time to break out the BFH and see what happens. It will never be pretty again but it will still be on the road

Hey guys I'm back if anyone is still listening lol. Everything went well for the winter and now I want some a/c. I crawled under and turned the driver side mix door to cold. But still no a/c on the driver side, cool but not cold like the passenger side. Kinda stumped now Would the A/c actuator be malfunctioning as well? #4 in the diagram in the link above. Nice and cold on the passenger side but only cool on the driver side. Could possibly be just outside air on the driver side it is only 70 degrees outside right now
The driver mix door seems to move easy enough plus I used a pliers to make sure so I'm fairly confident it is all the way to cold, which was the problem with the heat, it moved with the actuator but not all the way
Maybe the air flow is moving it a little towards hot? Since the actuator is not attached? Didn't have that problem with the heat but never know and I'm kinda reaching for an explanation why there is no cold air on the driver side

This is the problem I have with mine. I think it is the blend door or something in the dash but I can't say for sure....I evacuated the system and changed the orifice and accumulator (orifice was pretty gummed up) and it improved the temp quite a bit. It still is not as cold as the passenger side but better, to the point where I'm wondering if the passenger side is cooler simply for being closer to the evaporator core.

Well I guess the passenger will be comfortable lol, if my window is up. I don't think being closer would matter since both sides should be pulling air from the same place.
It's not the end of the world for me, this would be my first vehicle that the a/c actually worked. My wife's cars have always worked but I like to drive old stuff. This is the nicest car or truck I've driven since I bought a 92 Dakota in 95 and the a/c didn't work in that either
Thanks for all your advice, I appreciate it. You're pretty cool for a packer fan hahaha....Go Lions !!!!!
