Hi,
I have a 1998 Aurora for the last 15 years in Europe and since the very beginning when I hit the key fob button or the dashboard "trunk" button, the trunk was just opening itself a couple of millimetres. I then had to put my fingers into the insulation and bring it up manually.
I just never stopped wondering if the trunk shouldn't open full automatically?
You can imagine there are not many Auroras in Europe, I met just 1 during all this time on a gas station in Hungary but, unfortunately, the lady driving it didn't share my optimism at that time... so I never had anyone to ask how does this work originally.
So... how much originally does the trunk lid open itself?
Kind Regards,

It's just a "release" button. All it does is unlock it. If GM ever put their power trunk in an Aurora, I've never heard of it... GM also had a "power close" trunk, that you would gently push to within a couple of inches of latching, a motor would engage and gently close the trunk. My grandmother had that, in a 1990 Oldsmobile. I don't know if that ever made it to an Aurora, either.
I can't say if GM has put a full power trunk in any of their cars. I'm sure one of the other members can chime in, if they know. GM had power open/close doors in some of their minivans, so power trunk would seem like a next step.

Mine used to pop itself all the way depending on weather, if the car was level, etc haha. This would happen about 60% of the time www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Hj-rPKBr4sTechnically I believe it is just supposed to pop open exactly how you describe; enough to get your fingers in and push it up the rest of the way. I would guess that if you found some heavy duty struts that fit you could probably achieve the function in my video with regularity. The real problem is the trunk is a lot heavier than it seems. If you don't believe me, try removing the struts and lifting it. It is deceiving.

Well, I would say it's like you both say... it's just a wasted opportunity by GM to do something kind-of useful for a couple of $ in an obviously luxurious car... At least I don't feel dumb anymore for not "fixing" it for all the past 13 years

Just recently I almost bought a 2001 2nd gen Aurora which popped out of nowhere around me and while test driving it I opened the trunk... it gently opened up itself slowly all the way up!
Looks like the mechanism is exactly the same as on my 1st generation.
I also always wondered why there is the "trunk lid" switch in the glove box? Is it electrical? Mine doesn't seem to do anything... Maybe it's just a question of some delicate adjustment somewhere?

When you put the switch in the glove compartment to lock, it prevents the trunk lid from being opened & also does the same for the gas tank cap door. Sort of an ant-theft system.

Yes 2g all open up all the way because of the cross bars that make that happen.

Yes 2g all open up all the way because of the cross bars that make that happen. This is correct. The trunk on the 2g is designed differently (low liftover compared to 1g, bigger, pops all the way) while the 1g is like the riviera which it follows footsteps of. The 2g uses physics I am not smart enough to explain to make the lifting easier while also making the hinges not on the area outside the weather strip. Its a combination of spring assist, leverage, and possibly material. The hood is aluminum on 2g which makes it hell of a lot lighter than most cars with a steel hood, like my buick hood would be insane with steel but its very reasonable with aluminum. Im not sure if the 2g had a steel or aluminum trunk lid but its possible it was aluminum. If not, its just comes back to spring assist. The bars paul mentioned are exactly it. THere are also two bumpers which "stop" the lid I am pretty sure you can screw in or out on the lid or the body which line up the body lines as adjustment. The bars are under tension when closed so when you unlatch it it flips up but the hinged one cant without the struts like the hood has. notice the 2g doesnt have that either. The change is to make opening the trunk both easier and more convenieitn with a full set of hands like groceries or skis or something. The low lift over height was part of that ease expansion. The car was also able to be made with one less point of entry for water and things to seal or things to cause a leak since the hinge isnt bolted in the area water drains by passing over the area vs the 2g it cant permeate sheet metal with full paint etc, no seam or pass through or void to 1) QA check 2) be a point of install failure or wear failure 3) Be a quiet killer for trunk filling with water 4) less unsightly to people My 2g popped up, my 1g doesnt, my park avenue pops up, and im pretty sure the bars are the same just the trunk is much larger . also the body is deceiving because of the slope in to the center on the trunk but if you ever notice the lid is actually quite Long and it probably compares well to my park avenue lid which is wider at the back and has a larger tail light to hold on the very edge. So if it became a lighter metal it wouldnt surprise me. if it is all in the rods, its part of why the removal and install of the trunk lid is complex on aurora 2g but it is quite siomple for 1g.
