And confirming the late 2003 Aurora's have forged crankshafts - read it somewhere else, but that's a confirmation to me. Just need to understand what GM means by "late model" for 2003;)

I guess that 'early model" = 2001 & 2002 and "late model" is the 2003.

This is a 2003 service manual, so my understanding is that they started 2003 with leftover crankshafts from 2001/2002 and switched somewhere during the year.
One interesting occurrence was the Buick V6 odd fire to even fire transition, which happened during the 1977 model year... I guess for both cases, there's a sequential serial number in the VIN for the before and after.
