I need to do this pretty soon on my car because at a cold start up my DIC flashes "Low Engine Coolant". I checked the coolant level and the level is fine, so I narrowed the problem down to the fact that my coolant failed the alkalinity (sp?) test. I know how to do a flush and fill, thats not the problem....the problem is - why would it fail the test since my car only has 45k on it. I was thinking maybe because it's a 2001 and its 5 years old. Anyone else have a similar problem?

Could be the coolant level sensor in the overflow tank is faulty. Remember your coolant is DexCool, not standard green antifreeze. I'm not sure if the regular coolant testers apply to DexCool, go by an auto parts store and ask about that. I believe that it's supposed to be good to 8 years or 150,000 miles.

DexCool has been around for some time now. The proper alkalinity tester for it should be available.

The coolant interval is 150,000 miles or 5 years, you are at 5 years. So you might want to change it. But I agree, you need a dex-cool tester, and really the sensor doesn't work like that. Make sure it isn't crusted up or anything. The sensor is in the overflow bottle.

I will do the flush & fill myself and see what happens. its not that much money to try that out so if the message still pops up after the fact then I will look into the sensor
