Well, I talked to my mom last night and she said there's a problem with the Aurora. Apparently, it hums. All the time, except when stopped. That's all she can describe about it. I haven't heard it, and won't even get a chance to until the third weekend in March (!) when I'm next at home, thanks to school, work, and spring break. Thus, I have no expereince of it. I've just been working with what she gives me, which is pretty un-detailed stuff. It doesn't hum when it's stopped, and the hum doesn't change with engine RPM or vehicle speed. It does vary, however, leading me to believe it's something with wind noise, but she claims it's definitely coming from the engine compartment. It started suddenly in the past few days, so it doesn't actually sound like air noise. I was thinking maybe wheel bearing? Does anyone have experience with anything like this? I'm hoping to diagnose it from afar... Thanks for any help guys.

It's not just the warning indicators on her brake pads is it?

It's not just the warning indicators on her brake pads is it? That was what she thought at first, because someone at a dealer she took it to (by herself) last year told her her brakes were "getting dangerous" and would need replaced soon. Didn't specify which part, of course. They also charged her $200 to resurface the four rotors. Yeah... No, I checked the brakes out closely in early January when I performed an early 37,500 mile service. The pads are maybe half-worn, and the rotors look perfect. There is also zero fade and zero vibration on braking. It isn't related to brake wear, that I'm sure of.

Based on the symptoms you described I would start with carefully inspecting the tires and go up the driveline components from there. Could be a rock/nail stuck in the tire or a bad wheel bearing.

I'd agree with Kobalt, have the tires checked as well as the wheel bearings. A wheel bearing will stop humming when you turn right or left if I am not mistaken. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure I could diagnose a wheel bearing. I had that problem on the Galant early last summer. It wasn't pretty, either, as one hub assembly (I didn't know how to do it at that point.... I found how-to instructions about a week later.... d'oh!) cost me around $350 installed. Ouch.
We've been having some tire problems, as in a slow leak in what was the left front and is now the left rear. It wasn't large, about 2-3 lbs per week, so I didn't think much about that. I looked breifly for a nail or other object, but didn't find one. I'll tell her to go have that tire pulled off and checked... Thanks guys!

When I had a bad driver's side assembly hub on the SLS it hummed all of the time but changed pitch just a bit when making hard rights at moderate speeds.

Did it go bad fairly suddenly? I don't have experience with that, because the problem was already there when I bought the Galant. On the test drive, I thought it was a tire problem (the tires were very badly and unevenly worn, and were cheap off-brand tires anyway). Hmmmph...

One day it was just there.... Hmm... I figured that's what it was. I'll start with the tires first, though, to make sure it isn't something small like that. Sounds like the bearing's a good bet. Now to figure out which side... I don't trust my mom on that, so I'll have to trip home and drive it some. Heh. Thanks again guys!

The slow leak in the tires could be one of two things if there is no nail or screw in the tire. 1.)A bad tire valve OR: 2.)A corroded rim that allows air to slowly leak out, the fix is they pull the tire off and lightly grind the inside bead of the rim (bin done to my mom's '91 Park Ave 2 or 3 times now). Aluminum rims tend to do this, it is sad but normal. While your at the tire shop, get them to check out the tires for any defects.

Aluminum rims are horrible for corroding, I had 8 flat tires on my passat because of the rims, and yes each time i had a flat they resurfaced and resealed the tires.. I finally got fed up with changing tires, i just went out and bought steel rims, and brought the aluminum ones to a metal recycler..

Thanks for the continued responses! My mom took the car to a tire place and they found a 2" drill bit in the tire... They removed it and plugged the hole. We're currently waiting on GM Protection Plan to change the warranty policy name, and then we can get the other issues addressed. According to the Cadillac dealer that we've started permanently taking the Aurora to, GMPP usually takes two or three tries to actually get it right, which means several weeks. Good ol' Corporate America.

From experience, if I were you I would check the cabin air cleaner housing under the hood. They have a tendancy to suck paper from the glove box and draw it into the heater fan. Use a flashlight once you remove the cabin air cleaner. Just a guess it has happened twice on my 2001

Use a flashlight once you remove the cabin air cleaner. Just a guess it has happened twice on my 2001 I know... I check it occasionally. It was last checked (and did check clean) in early January, so that can be ruled out as a problem. Either way, it's definitely mechanical. As soon as the warranty paperwork goes through, it's the dealer's problem. Heh. I've had that whole side of the lower dash apart fixing the little strip of foam that acts as the barrier between the glovebox and that cleaner assembly. What a dumb design... It obviously flexes every single time the glovebox is opened, yet it was haphazardly stuck on the top of the box with some light adhesive that lasted a whopping 33,000 miles. Of course, there isn't much else to complaign about. Heh.
