Figured I'd start a new thread.
Well, I'm not a die-hard Meguiar's user, but that was the first product I used when I began to explore the world of car care a bit more. When I had my 1987 Celebrity, I used the AutoFom (with Fomblin-A!! ) car wash that we had at my parents house, and the bottle of Simoniz Super Blue Car Wax. They worked well and the Simoniz was easy to use and shiny. Then one day my mom brought home a bottle of Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax that was recommended to her by the Pontiac dealership (her 1995 Bonnie was new at the time and she wanted to keep it nice, or rather wanted to have the products so that I could keep it nice...).
Well, I tried this stuff out and I liked it a lot better than the Simoniz. This was probably because I never did any other prep besides waxing. So a cleaner/wax will have a much better result since it does some prep in the waxing step. When I bought my Corvette, I was still using the Cleaner/Wax, and it was great. Then one day I saw Gold Class Clear Coat Wax in a Wal-Mart. I noticed it was the same Meguiar's company and that it seemed to be their premiere wax. So I bought some and GC'd the Corvette all the time (seriously). One day a lot later I searched the web for Meguiar's, and found they had tons of products I'd never even heard of. Then that was it, I was hooked on detailing products and the rest is history. I've since moved on to many non-Meguiar's products and my favorite forum is Autopia, which is not Meguiar's specific.
Anyway, I try to be fair and useful when I use and review and suggest products, no matter who they are from. I guess someone from Meguiar's thought so too (Meguiar's Online was just started at the time) because I got an invite from them to come out to Irvine for a 3-day event. It was Thursday to Saturday, the Saturday being an open-house Detail Day for any Autopian member. But there were about 5 of us who were invited to come a few days before that. For us, Meguiar's paid for the hotel and they ended up taking care of all our meals too. They put together an awesome itinerary that I could not pass up (I had to pay my airfare, and that's all).
Day one, Thursday, take a limo from Irvine to Burbank, for a tour of Jay Leno's garage... Talk about amazing!! I saw the McLaren F1, the tank car, some Deusies, and so on. An incredible collection. Jay didn't make it down to visit, though, but hey, it was the cars I came to see! Then we headed over to the Peterson Auto Museum, which is great. But even better is getting a private tour of the underground where they keep and restore cars. All kinds of amazing stuff there. I've no picts as it was strictly prohibited at both places, so don't bother asking.
Day two, Friday, a day-long training session from Meguiar's staff. Very useful, all about paint, not just about Meguiar's products. I think I knew a fair amount about detailing (though certainly don't consider myself an expert) and I learned a ton.
Day three, Saturday, the Autopia Detail Day (Meguiar's has different groups out there every single Saturday for detail days), lots of folks showed up, lots of fun, seeing rides, sharing tips, helping people with their paint issues, etc.
Every day we got to hang out and talk shop and talk cars and talk whatever. And we got to hit some nice restaurants and got to get to know each other. Mike and Lynn Phillips were our Meg's "reps" who were taking us everywhere, and it was tons of fun to hang out with them as well as with the other folks who flew in. It would have been a great time if that was all that I got to do, throw in seeing Jay's cars and getting training and such, and it was an incredible time.
Anyway, I certainly don't intend to be a shill for them or a pimp. I like many of their products, some I hate, some I think are decent or good but not my preference. Here is an outdated shot of the products I own (note, I did not include leather/vinyl/glass products, other tools, etc):
