As most of you have hopefully read, I have implemented a change to the boards. Now only logged in members can read posts found in public forums.
I would like to run a week long trial to see the results and get some feedback on this change. Please feel free to point your views in this thread.

I voted yes. I like being able to view other boards without registering. Sometimes there is just one thread, or one issue that I want to read about. I won't ever come back or be a contributor to the forum, so being able to just read the one thing without registering is nice. I would bet we'll have more members that never contribute if registration is required to read threads. Just my two cents.

I'm not really sure if this is practical or not - but you could possibly have a members only area and a public area. Some of the forums like the meetings or chat could be members only, and others like the problems and questions could be public. Unfortunately you would still get the occasional bozo joining as a member, but that might cut it down a bit.

that will just leave alot of one-poster accounts and wasted bandwidth, server space. etc..

I said yes as well. I feel that knowledge should be free to all and not restricted. I understand that this board has experiienced something that has required Jim to implement this new feature, but if we only allow members to read and not guests, then I believe we are doing an even greater injustice to everyone. What we want, with the forums as well in everyday life, is a place that we feel welcome. A place that we can go to and do something relaxing. The members of this forum must get some "excitement" out of exchanging ideas with others and reading others thoughts. We want to encourage that on this board. We should accept anyone that may just be looking for an answer to a car problem or just looking to escape from reality. And hopefully those who just "leisurely" browse the boards will see who the people of ACNA are, a group of many different people that have come together to talk about what they find exciting.....the Oldmobile Aurora.
So yes I believe that we should "allow" guest to read our post. Hopefully that person will have something useful to add to our discussions and want to join our board.
Sorry to of been so lond winded and "preachy," but I feel that one should not be excluded from the knowledge others enjoy. You have every right to exclude them fron participatng in our discussions if they choose not to become a member.
That is just my two cents on the topic. Again sorry for being so long winded.
I just want to give Amanda a big thanks for starting this board. Amanda........you are doing a wonderful job.............keep up the good work. Jim..........thank you for helpping Amanda in running this place so smoothly . Everybody else, thank you for your very informative posts.

I lurked around the board for a couple weeks before I registered. If it wasn't open to guests, I probably wouldn't have joined. I always like to try it before I buy it!

I have to agree with letting guests read without registering. Just not be able to post without signing up.

I viewed the board for about a week too Jim before coming onboard. I agree with letting guest read without registering. Posting does have its privileges and that comes with signing up. I'm glad to see you and Amanda taking steps early to stop this kind of stuff.

I agree with letting guests read without registering after all it is a public forum and how else would they know if they want to join. I may be dim but I can't figger out how forum lurkers exploit the forum. If you are after more people becoming members could you initiate a flash screen urging guests to join as they move from topic to topic. Amanda,Erw38, and yourself are doing a great job administrating the board but there are bound to be a few odd buggers out there. Personally I find this forum incredibly informative and wish I had time to take a more active role but family matters dictate otherwise, however I am secure in the knowledge that if my Baby developes a problem I have a friendly forum to turn to for help. Hey, 10%! Just like the amount of people who vote in the United States! What a coincidence.

I just read the posts in this thread and I am a day late and a dollar short but before my son bought his car I was reading your forums for input and to see if there were any issues with the year car we were looking at. I was very appreciative (word??) of how everyone was so helpful and when we bought the car there was no second thoughts about joining this awesome forum. I am glad you are allowing guests to read at least some of the areas in the forum. My 2 cents worth only
