Our Intrigue and Aurora has a problem with paint chipping off various buttons, especially the stereo. Is this a GM quality control problem, or are our fingers corrosive? This bugs me because the Aurora has the Bose stereo and I don't want to replace it.

the paint chipping will be covered by thte factory warranty on your 2003 unless you have over 60,000 miles. The paint chipping off seems to be somewhat common. The usual cause is fingernails digging into them.

Might explain the chipping.

The buttons for my temp up/down had pretty much chipped all the red and blue paint off when I bought my car from previous owners who it seemed didn't know you could change the temperature through the steering wheel controls - instead pressing that one button 20 times each way to change the temp Anyway I'd like to get it replaced... how much would it cost through non-warranty?

I meant just the buttons... but I probably won't bother getting them replaced. I never ever use those two buttons anyway, they're so frustrating. But the previous owner(s) did for some reason, and scraped them to bits. I'll probably just put some tape over it or something. at night annoyance.... with a flash... Well I posted the second picture too because looking at it, I notice that the temperature gauge has "A/C Off" and Set and a celsius option, too... but haven't ever seen these light up or, for instance, figure out how to display in celsius. I guess they just make that screen mass market or something and use it only for fahrenheit temperature in the Aurora?

all of the displays and gauges can be changed to metric readings using a tech II scanner. Other H body cars like the Bonneville and LeSabre can change all the displays just by simply pressing the E/M button on the dash.. you can't buy just the buttons either on the climate control. The entire unit is sold only.

Oldsmobile has already provided a very easy and quick function in the Driver's Information Center to do it for you. Follow these instructions. They are in your Owner's Manual. Press the 'On/Off' button on the DIC for about five seconds or so. The DIC will display 'Metric Mode'. The displays for the DIC, Electronic Climate Control, and the Odometer/Trip Odometer will change and now be in metric format. To change the displays back to 'English mode', repeat the above procedure. This procedure works even if you turn the DIC display totally 'Off'. Try it. You'll like it!!! ;D skexius

Wow, very cool. I was always kinda annoyed about the arrogance of GM simply ignoring metric measurements and celsius and whatnot - they are far superior despite the fact that we don't use them in the US, cars should still consider them... like for Canada or whatnot. I just thought it was closeminded ..but now I realize that they're not as bad as I thought - the entire car can be metric, awesome! (sorry to change the subject, I tend to do that a lot)

You can easily fix those chipped spots by simply using a permanent black magic marker. A couple hits on it should do the job.
