Are you pushing in the button to shift gears? You might have to give it a good hard tug to make it come off, just make sure the clip is out

just pull the c clip, push the button in and pull up hard, it should just pop off. the only thing you should worry about breaking is the wires to the power/normal switch, but then it has pretty long leads, and theres a possibility they are already broken anyways, dont be afraid to pull too hard, I don't think you can hurt it, I've done it 3 times now haha

Well the woodgrain and console are pretty much one piece as far as I remember

This has been a great help! My grain looks terrible and needs to be replaced, now I know how to get the thing off!
P.S. Do we have anyone who's removed the cup holders from the console? Mine is destroyed and I'd love to fix that.

Excellent step by step guide and pictures! Thank you. I took the center console out today and I fixed the wires to my shifter light. It works great. I found that the LED that lights up my traction control on/off has broken leads so I will have to fix that sometime. It took me all day, because the trans power switch popped apart and a spring flew out. It took me two hours to find the spring but I reassembled it. Thanks again for the help.

Can someone post a photo of the lights at the center console? And part # for those lights. I think some lights never work since I got the car so i doubt if i know the existence of some lights....... I only see a Shifter indicator lamp (74). Which kind of wire/tape should I use? How to securely connect wires? And can someone give me a link to the 74 bulb? 1.Is it safe to shift out of park while I am working in the car? If I insert the key and leave the door open, the chime doesn't stop... pretty annoying
2.Do I need to disconnect the battery before doing all these? Under the hood or under the rear seats? How?
3.How to get the shift knob out? I got the center console and it seems the only thing(except wires) prevent it from coming out is the shift knob. I pulled it really hard for half an hour but it didn't come out even a little bit. Do I need to push some buttons or hold something while I pull it? Any tips? The knob drives me nuts.

well make sure your parking brake works, engage it and use that. If you dont like your chime goin DING DING DING all the time and you want your door open, take a small screwdriver and push the latch itself to the first click, that will stop the ding because the car thinks the door is shut, JUST DONT SHUT THE DOOR UNTIL YOU PULL THE HANDLE FIRST TO RELEASE IT, and even then you may have to push the latch open again to make sure you dont jam it up... Theres a pin on the back of the shifter in a tiny slit, dig it out with a small knife

Thanks for the info. My parking brake works, but it cannot stop my car on a slope(maybe it's because I didn't shift into park). I am pretty sure I can drive with parking brake, is this normal? some new questions I get today 1.When I was working on the console, my screwdriver bit fell into the hole under the shifter, can't get it out...... I am pretty sure it's still there but just not visiable(between two steel plates at the bottom of the center console) Will this become a safety concern? I can believe there was trash in the center console... coins,pencil,candy(unopened)... I guess they fell in the console from the cupholder Any other vehicles have this problem? I think it's a safety issue that GM should issue a recall for 2.What is that metal ring? (under the front vent) 3.There's only one connector coming out of the shifter knob, it's for the power button, right? How can I tell if it works, does it make any difference at low speed(under 40MPH)? I just realize the shifter doesn't need a connector....... 4.How to disconnect this? I got the main clip but dunno what to do with the two liner clip on the side 5. What should I do with the gear indicator? It's broken and I have no idea where it goes..... The bulb is still there

I read the entire thread again and figured out the housing for the shift indicator lamp is broken, can someone give me a pic showing how it is attached? It would be nice if I can buy it from somewhere, maybe have to try glue...

realdreams, your photos were HUUUGE as posted. I changed them to clickable links, although feel free to re-integrate them if you can reduce them in size so they fit on the webpage when posted. Just FYI.

Yeah, when I pulled my shifter out and tried to disconnect my Power Transmission wire, it came clean undone so I had to splice it back together. I realized that after I got the whole dash together and my seats in and the car washed, i forgot to put in the bulb for the shift indicator, the orange thing, so I can't see what gear I am in at night, Do'h! I gotta fix that! totallyunrelated to the topic, but! i was redoing the timeing chain and gears in my 76 carpi II (boy was that a car) had the cover back on, water pump and belt, starting the fan when my buddy walked by and asked if i was done! i said "almost" then he kicked the oil sling out from under the tire, that go's on the bottom gear, and i realized i I WAS NOT QUITE DONE YET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

I found this site last year, maybe you all know about it, but it is www.compnine.com. I got console parts from them (new) including boot, boot retainer and shifter sliding plate with lamp housing. I think their site is temporarily down, but it is hard to navigate, so, find the Aurora Classic parts in the Olds section, and the breakdown looks like the old microfish format. Anyway, you can replace about all of the console parts from them as well as other hard to find parts (new). By the way, they ain't cheap!! Bob

Well I'm sure I should have posted my question in the "electrical"section, but I was reading this thread and decided to replace the shift indicator bulb in my console as well. But, here's what happened;
I did have to extend the wiring on the trans/power/norm button as the wires were ripped apart either before I pulled the shifter or due to my pulling the shifter lever off. After installing a new shift indicator bulb, and reconnecting the trans/power/norm wires, I turn the key to the on position and I have no readout on DIC or climate controls. However, the blower motor is now running and I cannot turn it off.
Anyone have an idea what might have caused this or where I should start to troubleshoot? I already double checked the connections under the center console and can't figure out what I might have done.

Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and reconnect.

Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and reconnect. LOL, called my Dad since he knows a bit more about electronics than I do and he said the exact same thing... So I did. When I reconnected the battery and went to turn the key on, the same thing happened, but the starter wouldn't turn over. I obviously ran the battery down while tinkering with the radio on. So I threw it on the charger for a few and "BAM", she started up and everything is just fine. Never thought that would have happened because the battery was about to die. Needless to say, I was not thrilled when I pulled the console and found this:

Yep, resolved.
I actually took that pic after disconnecting the trac control switch and the rest of the wiring harness. My guess is that I pulled up on the shifter too hard and yanked the wires for the trans switch and the shift indicator, but not sure if it was like that before or not.

Something I learned fixing the shift indicator light on my classic: the bulb is tied into the same wiring for the auxillary cigarette lighter. I was wondering why even after replacing the bulb and repairing the wiring it still didn't work and then I remembered that the cigarette lighter for the passenger side didn't work either, so I checked the manual and learned that the lighter is controlled by the "auxiliary instrument panel fuse" which is a 20amp in the drivers front fuse box. Fixed it and got both the lighter and light back. My guess is the wires broke, touched and blew it.

I struggled to remove the wood grain console top for some time before I re-attached the battery, started it up and moved the gear selector to 2nd. The top just doesn't come off with the car in P
