just pull the c clip, push the button in and pull up hard, it should just pop off. the only thing you should worry about breaking is the wires to the power/normal switch, but then it has pretty long leads, and theres a possibility they are already broken anyways, dont be afraid to pull too hard, I don't think you can hurt it, I've done it 3 times now haha

Welcome to the club! Turn your key on and shift down into 1-2, you should then see a slot, the clip is in the slot, I use a flat blade screwdriver to remove it. When you take the shifter off, remove the boot from it first, the boot is part of the console itself, it is not part of the shift handle, and if you pull the boot off the console, it ruins the original bond.

On page 2 of this thread check the post by Roxie60. In the 2nd picture you can clearly see the slit in the shifter handle where you need to extract the clip. It's on the front side of the handle facing the radio which is why you have to put the shifter in low gear to ease access. Clip actually looks like giant staple.

Excellent Thread as I am in the process of a restoration of interior on My car. the previous owner obviously had a lot of problems coping with simple everyday things that are simple to most. The plastic shift indicator was broken in half when i got the car and also had a lot of really heavy hazing on it and looks like heck. So last time I was at the junk yard i started pulling the console out of one of the parts cars I am cannabalizing I got really really close to having the whole thing off but did not succeed. No use breaking the part I intend to us as a replacement.

First remove radio bezel. Remove your stuff from console, six screws in the box, two in the ashtray area. Remove the switch and light. I already had it out but the red circles are where the screws were at. Put car into first gear, look in front of the shifter. Pull the clip out with a screwdriver. Pull shifter off very carefully, do not pull the wire out. Mine was already broke off. The shifter light wire and power button wire both move with the shifter. Your power wire could be broke off without you even knowing. I couldn't find where my wire was connected. It goes into the harness but it was broke off flush. I recommend you cut the wrap and give these wires a little more travel. I also had to rewire my shifter light. There are four clips holding the rest of it on. They are circled in this picture. It helps to have your shifter in third or drive. Reach down under the cupholders and carefully push up. It should pop out pretty easy. Unhook the wires and you should have it out. Keep track of these clips. The one on the bottom left stayed in there when I pulled mine out. I thought I lost it. This is what it looks like out so you know what you are working with. I know it isn't quite complete I just thought the photos would help. Hope this helps some people out RANDY---None of your pictures show up! I'm getting ready to tackle the "no light on the shift indicator" and the disconnect of the the BTSI solenoid and want to get in and fix this stuff without breaking my wife's car! Can you repost the images? Thanks!

The radio bezel is easy... This album should help though. This was on $300 '98 before I fixed it up a bit on the cheap and drove for a couple years in the winter. She is a parts car now. I don't have time at the moment to describe them all but use Randy description and match the pics. HTH.

SUPER DUPER HELPFUL!!!! Thanks Sal. In any of those pictures can you see the BTSI solenoid? I called around and no one sells the BTSI solenoid separately---they all require purchasing the entire assembly at $300+! Thanks. Will tackle this tomorrow as long as it's not snowing too badly

Bottom center. It is the only thing down there with a plug besides the main connector and the latch/console lamp. I would suggest getting the interior nice and warm before you go trying to remove the console. Less chance to brake the old brittle plastics.

You are very wise....supposed to be 40˚ tomorrow, so I'll run the engine a bit and get it toasty. Bought the bulb for the shifter light and then disconnect the BTSI solenoid and my projects on the car for this week will be done. Then to tackle those pesky lumbar bolsters!

Careful not to touch the print on the clear panel over the shift indicator ... that's fragile. Most of mine disappeared when I tried cleaning it.
No biggie ... simple enough to count clicks.
And no ... I didn't have to remove the entire console to change the light either. And only remember losing a little blood trying to get in there. <G>
