Welcome to the Aurora Performance section of ACNA.
Feel free to post any questions or ideas you have about performance related options in your Classic of 2001+ Aurora.
If you have a creative idea, share it with us! We all know the 4.0L Northstar is a beast waiting to be unleased, so lets see what you've got.

I'm glad that this board has been set up, because it gives me a chance to ask a question that I have asked on numerous Aurora forums over the years: We all know that 1995/99 Auroras with the Autobahn Package, and all 2001/02/03 Aurora 4.0s are limited to 135 mph. If it were not for the speed limit program- ming, what would the real top speed be? ______________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

If that was the case Marc, the car would have to come with Z-rated tires from the factory. And since we know the tranny is electronically limited with red line limiter I bet that would impact the top speed.
As well as aerodynamics, get to a point where lift and drag become an issue.
What else?
135 eh? What kinda tires does the 2001+ Aurora come with?

135 eh? What kinda tires does the 2001+ Aurora come with? The 4.0 came with H-rated Michelin Energy MXV4 Plusses in 235/55-17 on a 17x7.5" wheel. I believe the reason for the limiter being so close to the classic's V-rated limit is that the 2001+ has so much less weight on the front tires.

How did this weight reduction on the front of the car differ so greatly from the classic. The vast majority of the weight is the 4.0L engine and tranny, which is indentical? Is it not?
I know the 2nd gen has a shorter front end then the classic, but I'm interested to know where all this weight reduction happened and what changed (despite the obvious change in vehicle architecture)
H-rated tires are 129 mph, similar to the Eagle RSA 235/55/17's found on SSEi and GTP model Pontiacs. Those vehicles have the same speed limiter at 128 mph in OD.
I am also sporting H-rated tires wrapped around my rims. But I never drive any higher then 125 mph (despite my Autobahn capabilities).
I find it odd that H-rated tires would be put on a vehicle that is governed at 135. Why not just play it safe and go all the way with V-rated, even though its lighter?

How did this weight reduction on the front of the car differ so greatly from the classic. The vast majority of the weight is the 4.0L engine and tranny, which is indentical? Is it not? The new is 165 lbs. lighter. The car has a 63/37 or so f/r split. So that's roughly 51 lbs off of each front tire. Also, the Energy MXV4 V-rated (not plus) needs 5 psi more and can only handle 94% of it's max weight rating at 143 mph. To hit 149, you need to be at 91% or less of the max weight rating. The MXV4 Plus can hit it's 130 mph max with 100% of the load rating and 5 extra psi. Sorry, gotta run, but there's some of it. You're right, the H-rating is for 130 mph. No idea what's up with that.

Aurorans, Speaking of performance... D. Miller has his 8th Annual Olds Powered Nationals at Norwalk Raceway Park July 29, 30 & 31 in Norwalk, Ohio. I won't be racing my Diamond White but I'll be there with my 455 Olds powered Olds Custom Cruiser. Anyone here considering going to the event? Maybe a grudge match is in order? The Custom Cruiser is a full size station wagon after all. It CAN'T be that fast.
