I was wondering if anyone has tried making a true dual exhaust for this car or if any of the exhaust systems that are on the market do this.
I'm considering building my own exhaust system using 2 2.5 inch pipes going through the center of the car, although the opening in the back between the A-arms is only 4.5 inches so i'll have to figure somethin' out with that one.
then i'd probably use dual Flowmaster's out the back, or if anyone has suggestions if you think a different mufflers to get a better "V8 sound" like this thing should be making ;D
But yeah, another thing is i have a very tight budget, hence why i'm building my own system instead of buying something that has been researched on, ( I am a poor college student ) heh, and i still owe $1300 on the car.

Yeah, well, i'm goina say somethin' i know i'm going to get ridicuiled for later on, lol, i'm planning on twin turbocharging my car within' a year, so i'm goina need that high flow.
I know that the job of converting a N/A car to a Forced Induction car is no simple task, I know because i was working on twin turbocharging my taurus then i learned that my transmission on that thing was junk and wouldn't even come close to handling the power. also the 3.0 12V V6 is a crap motor. I'm not terribly set on doing this as this car has more than enough power for me at the moment, i think its more like a challenge and the pursuit of having the only aurora with a Twin-Turbocharged engine ;D

That would be a daunting task...I expect photodocumentation of this project Good luck! btw Domestic Performance has a turbo for the Aurora and the 4T80E could probably handle it..for a while

Of coarse i will put pictures on here, how else can i brag, lol.
But unfortunately, i won't be starting the project until about July of next year, by then i should have some funds to do this. Heh, hopefully i can find a business that does computer tuning that is in need of advertising their work, that way maybe i can get a discount, lol, cause that's goina be spendy.

Supastealth....it would be easier to use a single 3" dia. pipe. A 3" diameter pipe has the same capacity as a pair of 2 1/8" diameter pipes. I remember seeing this topic on another board that has since gone off the net. That discussion mentioned that the largest diameter pipe that could go in place of the stock size was 3". ______________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

yeah, i'll have to see, because the area i live in doesn't really have readilly available 3" exhaust piping, the places around me carry at the biggest 2.5" and its cheap.

If you can do it, sweet, but there is hardly room for a twin-turbo setup. Would you go with intercoolers? Even though it's not as cool sounding, a centrifugal supercharger would have similar characteristics to a turbo, but be a lot easier to package.

|
Post by SupaStealth on Aug 2, 2004 18:25:12 GMT -6
Yeah, that is very true that would be another problem is the issue of room, i know with the Taurus i had i relocated the battery to the trunk and that created plenty of room, but the battery in the aurora is already stored somewhere else, i don't know where i could create room, i'll have to do some measuring.
I would use intercoolers, but thats another thing, where could i fit it (them..possibly).
i've heard these computers are also very difficult to work with, so that is also another issue, let alone the transmission being able to handle it, but i'm not too hard on my car, i seldom drive it hard because i definitely can't get any more speeding tickets. So i think the tranny would hold up just fine, its all in the high end anyways, not the low end torque, where i would assume the most damage would occur rather than up top.

Ya, yer right, the Autobahn tranny is geared at 3.71, so it can handle pretty much any abuse (within reason) That level of gearing actually suprises me, but watching the tach move as fast as it does is good fun. As for the PCM, the only chip available so far is for the 95 I would love one to disable torque management...hehe...can you say Limited Slip ;D

I don't have the Autobahn setup , but oh well, that keeps me under 110mph, hehe, i definitely dont need to be going 135mph, (for now, lol)

Post by JimW on Aug 2, 2004 19:47:17 GMT -6
Oh bummer...well yer still geared at 3.48:1 I hate to say it, but I reach 108 mph far to easily the only thing that stops me from doing over 128 mph is traffic of course, but also the rating on my summer tires...only H-rated

I was watchin' a thing on the History channel the other day, and they did a thing on the Autobahn in Germany, one of the guys was in a porsche with his cruise set at 135mph, and a different porsche blew past him at 212mph like nothin', and these people were just cruising!, i want to drive on the autobahn, lol, ya just gotta make sure you don't pass anyone on the right, otherwise you'll get a ticket, lol.

hey now, yes Taurus transmissions are Junk. Most years. But, if you get the 3.0 regular engine, not the duratec engine, they are a workhorse engine and last forever. The 3.8L is junk and all performance versions of the 3.0, such as the 24-valve version are junk, BUT, the regular 3.0L V6 engine is great. In my opinion, if they put a better tranny in the 3.0L V6 taurus with fancier trimmings and better body-style, id be driving on of those instead of an aurora. Let's face it. Any GOOD new car in todays modern world should last at LEAST 200,000 miles without engine trouble. Auroras are a fun car but are way too sensitive with TONS of problems. They're fun to drive and interested to work on, but they aren't that dependable in my opinion and unlike the taurus, parts are 10 times as expensive and almost everything is not in stock, special order.

Yes i agree about staying on topic, lol.
ok, so i was talkin' with my brother, he found a guy that would do it cheap, like under 200 bucks, i decided on dual 2.25 inch pipes from each header with each having a cat and a muffler, but he's worried that the back pressure would be too low, any comments on that?
I might have to give up on having "True Dual Exhaust"

Back pressure is so critical on most cars, its a balance, you need to open up to allow freer flow of exhaust air, while maintaining enough backpressure to maintain the torque. Especially since the DOHC gives you higher band tq power!
Honestly, cat back performance exhaust like Corsa or Magnaflow is your best bet, not only for sound, but overall performance, its like 15-17hp gains

what size exhaust does corsa use?

Post by tedhontz on Aug 3, 2004 20:58:19 GMT -6
off the topic, SHO's are junk too using yamaha engine.
NOW, on the topic. I watched the video with audio with your exhaust Jim, and, GOT TO HAVE IT!! Question, you say catback- does your new mufflers accept standard size aurora pipe? If so, couldn't you just but the mufflers and not everything cat back? Where is a good site to learn about the different mufflers, to see prices, and to purchase? Mine is just too quiet. See, I can get back on the topic!

I used 2 stainless steel F-body mufflers from Magnaflow (F-body 3800 Firebird and Camaro) I posted some P/N's for it...I have to go back and dig a bit.
I needed new pipe cut from the Y-split back, I believe the pipe is 2.5" from the Y-split into the back of the muffler...you gotta check the in/out specs. I added custom tips as well (quads). All those vids were done BEFORE the cat back was completed. I did the rest of the pipe and the high flow cat afterwards.

Post by tedhontz on Aug 3, 2004 22:32:02 GMT -6
ok, how much for the mufflers? CAN they bolt to existing pipes?
|
|
|
Post by Aurora40 on Aug 4, 2004 8:47:49 GMT -6
The Corsa uses 2.5" pipe I believe. The stock intermediate pipe is 2.5", and the Corsa retains this size. The Y stays 2.5", which I think is 2.25" on the stock pipe. I'm fairly sure this is the case, though when I installed it, the Corsa intermediate pipe fit over the stock pipe without a flared end, so it must be a little bigger (the cat isn't bolted in, but one contiguous pipe). If you do go with true-duals, you will probably notice a very different exhaust sound. Having the pipes crossover often smooths the sound out making it more even. True duals might sound a little bit strange on a large 4-door. Will you use resonators? I would strongly suggest you not delete the resonator from your exhaust plan unless you really don't care about the quiet luxury ride while cruising.

you have to remember now, that im used to owning Mustang 5.0 cars. I've owned 9 of them all in the years between 1986 and 1991 all with the 5.0 engine and what i consider the TRUE true dual exhaust. I've had off-road H-Pipes on all but 2 of them with different exhausts on most of them. SO, if taking the resonator off will make it rumble more, thats fine with me. BUT, keep in mind this is my wife's car most of the time, so i dont want to spend alot . Im wanting to get a second aurora from me once i learn some more on these cars. I was hoping that by just replacing two mufflers with a better brand stock fit muffler, id notice a world of difference. If not, then i dont want to mess with it. ON mustangs you can get a great catback kit with all pipes, fittings, and 2 mufflers for $220 complete and an offroad h-pipe for a $100, so spending $1000 would make me sick.

Hmm, i could build myself a H-pipe i suppose if that'd keep it sounding like a piece of crap, i just don't want it to be backfiring and rasping like a mother... nice 'n smooth like the mustangs with that great sound.

Hey now Supa. I've owned 9 mustangs and NEVER has one ever backfired. Though, the 4.6L in the later years, yes they can. BUT, GM's wonderful camaros backfire all the time. Its because they have a cheap exhaust using only one muffler instead of two. NOt true dual exhaust, like the BETTER mustang. Im glad they stopped making those pieces of junk. And now, yes i like the aurora. Mustangs perform better, sound better, and come with a manual shift. The aurora with a V8 is very slow. My brothers CAMRY will kill this car. 0-60 aurora specs are 8 seconds! Plus the aurora is hard to work on, unlike mustang. Its hard to get parts for, unlike mustang. Parts cost ten times more for less quality parts than mustang. Mustangs have hundreds of aftermarket performance parts compared to almost nothing available for aurora. And to sum it all Aurora, you figure with the mass problems with this EXPENSIVE engine, you could at least rebuild the thing. BUT, the wonderful folks at GM put THROW AWAY HEADS on this SUPPOSED to be good EXPENSIVE engine therefore making it non-rebuildable. Another great idea from the General Morons! So, the only reason why i have this car is because even though the mustang kills the aurora in performance, sound, and RELIABILITY, the mustang looks like an escort inside because it was half the price of an aurora and its not a four door. SO, growing up now i have to sacrifice the performance and reliability for the betterhandling and four doors the aurora has making it more practical. But, another mustang is definately in my future for a weekend car. SO, you better get your facts straight before you blab on topics you dont know about. Everyone knows mustangs exhausts are better designed, and NO the offroad h-pipe, made by over 10 performance companies will not cause it to backfire!

Ok..well fair enough, but you're comparing apples to oranges, the Aurora is a luxury sedan and the Mustang is a performance sports car. The designers and engineers arent even in the same ball park when comparing.
I would certainly hope that a 5L Mustang could beat a 4L Aurora. Its not even comparable. The exhaust is set up totally different. You might be able to ATTEMPT a duplication of a Mustang in sound, but everything down to the core is different.
When I did my exhaust, it was not to sound like a Mustang, or a Camaro or whatever, I wanted it to sound like a smooth, yet aggressive V8. And I got more kick out of the car to boot.
The Aurora was built for the retired or late adult lady or gentlemen who could drop their car off at the dealer for servicing go play a round of golf or sit on their boat and come back to pick up there car, its not a gearheads car, we shouldnt try and pass it off as one. Unlike some other cars which were built for motorheads.
Lets be aware of these differences.

Ok, ya know what ted, i'd appreciate if you'd settle down... the whole reason i'm posting on here is to learn, thats how i'm getting your facts straight, this is a friendly forum, please keep it like one.
I'm not saying i want it to sound exactly like one, yes i know the mustang is faster, big deal, thats not the point i'm trying to put out here, i'm just saying i like the sound and i'd like to create an exhaust system to sound about as aggressive as that engine sounds, i'm just looking for some ideas for muffler's that'll create the rumble, but i'd still like that cruising speed to be somewhat quiet, i have a system so that an drown out some but i don't want to give my occasional passanger a headache.
i'm not trying to act like i know everything, cause i don't, not even close, i would just like some help creating a system for fairly cheap (not $1000, lol)

ok, SUPA, now that YOU have settled down. I believe that you were the one who started this! And i DON'T appreciate you telling ME to settle down and keep this a friendly forum. I agree. This should be a friendly forum, but wasn't it YOU that typed this? "Hmmm, I could build myself a H-Pipe I suppose if that'd keep it sounding like CRAP! I just dont want it backfiring and rasping like a mother!" And being on the board of the Indiana Mustang Convention I take offense to that! I know almost everything about the 5.0 mustang engine and its all good. I agree, in most part, with Jim. Mustang beats the Aurora hands down in performance. BUT, Aurora BEATS MUSTANG in all areas of Luxury and being practical, except needing premium fuel. The only part i disagree with is the car being built for a senior with no interest in working on the car. There seems to be alot of automotive forums on this car. Over 9000 just on one site, not this one. And when i was used car shopping for one, alot of them were tinkers with, obviously by guys in their garages. You almost have to fix in your own garage cause it costs too much to have a shop fix these hard to work on cars with their non-rebuildable engines. So, yes i agree, you need to keep your posts friendly, we all do, and to start you don't call other people's ideas CRAP. I know that what i want in sound from my car isn't what some adult want from their car. Mustangs are LOUD, BUT, are smooth in sound. Its the camaros that are too gurgly. I don't like backfiring and all that. I do miss driving down the street on the downtown street with all my windows down listening to the nice exhaust sound while noticing all the turning heads. I'll do some investigation work on the exhausts and let you know. You let me know about how i can some stereo mods for this car. I noticed you said you have a system. My delco CD player looks nice but reads all these E20, E23 codes and hardly plays cds. I don't like the cheap look of aftermarket smaller radios in this car with the little buttons. I do know that you can SPECIAL ORDER from circuit city a STOCK SIZE GM ALPINE flush mounted cd deck thats all black with chrome rotary volume knob. I don't want amps and all that, but some new better 6X9's would be nice. Let me know and ill let you know when my exhaust better and owns custom exhaust world inc. gets back with me!
