I received a reply today and here's what it says...
Hi Jeff, Where is the screen on the MAS? You do need to place the Tornado after the screen in order for the Tornado to be effective. If you place it before it may not be as effective. As for the "Why didn't the GM engineers do it years and years ago? Because it isn't possible." questions, GM has actually came out with that technology. They have interjected that technology deeper in the engine than the Tornado works. The Vortec engine from GM makes that possible. It swirls the air as it goes into the combustion chamber. I'm sure your friends have heard of the vortec engine. Let me know where your screen is so I can help you out more. Heheh, yes you want swirl entering the combustion chamber. Swirling the air way upstream doesn't cause that. The swirl in this case is to evenly distribute and vaporize the fuel charge. Other than that, swirl isn't good because it impacts flow.
Whatever, let us know how you like it.
Doesn't your MAF bolt to the TB, though?

Doesn't your MAF bolt to the TB, though? The MAF does bolt to the TB and I just don't think there's room for the Tornado to fit after the screen. I like how the guy said "If you place the tornado before the screen it may not be as effective," wrong, it absolutely will NOT be effective if you place it before the screen.

As far as mileage improvement goes, I assume that the you already have a benchmark to test against. As far as performance improvement, I suggest benchmarking that by a trip down the quarter mile at a local track or a chassis dyno. So-called seat of the pants (otherwise known as buttt dyno) is meaningless and inconclusive. I have driven cars after modding that I swore were faster/more responsive, but when it came to actually measuring the results their were either no changes or in some cases, things got worse.

I haven't taken anything apart yet but it looks like it will be a tight fit.
I'm not too worried about it. When I ordered it I had no idea it had to be placed after the MAF sensor.
I'll get to it one of these days.. I hope this was the reply you've all been waiting for.

Then we can say "we told you so." ;D I'm just kidding.

Drive easier and you'll get better than 1-2mpg. I don't think it will make much of a difference but it's only 45 bucks so what the he....ll. that $45 is a tank of gas and some for your lawnmower too. that cost will not be recovered with a piece of plastic that claims to give you better gas milage. it cannot and will not. the comment regarding driving easier will help much more. turn the power button off. shift into neutral on long idles. don't use the ac as much or the rear defogger. accelerate gentrly and don't spin the wheels. this car is rated at 27mpg highway. it has a 4.0L V8 and weighs 3800lbs. for that displacement and the amount weight we're talking about, it's pretty good gas milage. if you want better, you're gonna have to go out and buy a 4 cylinder with half the horsepower. you would probably be in the low to mid 30mpg with that. i don't belive the toyota prius can actually normally do more than 40mpg although it's rated at 60something. the old toyota supras and mazda rx-7 were both 24mpg highway. if it was possible to make this engine 28 or 29mpg by sticking a piece of plastic in it, why didn't the GM egineers do it years and years ago? because it isn't possible. EXCELLENT POINT INDEED.

Interested in hearing the results.
The "Vortec" technology that is used in GM engines is to cause more air flow to go through the intake valve on the unshrouded side increasing the flow rate of the head without making the valves larger. The fact that the air swirles in the cylinder is an added effect not the purpose behind the design.
I seriously doubt that the "Tornado" will help fuel economy or power. In fact I would actually believe that it could infact cause an inbalance in the amount of air that the cylinders. If you spin the air and then give it 4, 6, or 8 pathes to take it will go to the outermost passages, this means that when this swirling air enters the intake it will feed more air to certain cylinders than others.
Why do you think GM put the screen to striaghten the air flow on the MAf sensor in the first place, it makes sure that each cylinder gets the same amount of air.

These types of fans work very well... to ventilate engine compartments in boats. I've owned and installed a lot of them and recognize them instantly. They reduce the danger of explosive gases filling the engine bay, mos def don't need a fire while 25 miles offshore. However we use other things for performance improvement, not ventilation fans.
