I'm considering upgrading my Catalytic converter to a high-flow unit. I'm also considering the addition of Borla mufflers. The Borla's are supposed to be some of the best flowing mufflers in their price range. I also like their exhaust note. My question is what is a realistic increase in horsepower I might expect from this setup? The high flow catalytic converter will probably be a magnaflow. I don't think the resonator on the Aurora is that restrictive. In all this would be around $300 for parts. With my gutted airbox and K&N filter along with this would I be looking at around a 225 horsepower vehicle? Will many shops replace a properly working catalytic converter? last I asked they said they can't touch them unless they fail.

Borlas are the best cause they are SS, but are the most expensive im pretty sure. They shoudl flow really good. I am not sure about sound though, it may be too ricey.
They will replace mine before it fails, but htat may just be a personal favor cause i know the guy well. Hmm...check your local laws or something. Thats really stupid if they dont though, i mean who cares? Its your money not theres...
I also get the magnaflow. Its about $200 i think.

It's against the law to replace a functioning cat. Also, I don't believe it's a big restriction, or at least that a cat that will work properly could reduce it much (vs just removing it). You'd also very likely get an SES light unless you put in a faker post-cat o2 sensor.
The only way to really know the improvement is to measure it. On the dyno, at the track, etc. I don't know that as many people have done this upgrade to the 3.5, so it's hard to say what the result will be.
As an aside, I've heard from several Corvette owners who felt their Borla was more restrictive than it seemed it would be. However I suspect anything is an improvement over our stock Aurora mufflers.

On the Riviera it sounded really deep but wasn't loud. I don't want it really loud but a little deeper would be nice. I also don't want drone at cruising speed. ( I find that annoying.) As for the Magnaflow converter, I found a site where it's less than $100. I don't think a shop will replace it for me though so I'll probably have to not do that part of the exhaust.

Why not take a hammer or sledge to the cat? They really can't argue with you then, if you "accidentally" hit something at just the right angle or say it was vandalized.

Yeah, and believe me, lots of them have been replaced w/o being "bad." Get Shrooms hammer and let it have it and expand your exhaust systems performance. :-)

That is silly, not being able to REPLACE a functioning cat. Take the advice, hit it with a big hammer a couple of times and it'll start rattling. A Magnaflow would be a good choice and I've heard good things about the Borla mufflers. Let us know. As for the HP gains, you'll pick up a few but not all that much. Everybody has to realize that the Aurora is a luxury touring sedan, it's not meant to be a 350HP monster. Dress it up and don't thrash it too much and you will definitely enjoy it.

Don't bother with the cat, it will probably flow just as much as your stock cat.
The new cats are high flowing anyways, in fact many manufactures will state that their cat is a high flow model because it will outflow the older cats but in fact it is just a regular OBD2 compliant cat.
The new cats arn't worth the bother to replace if the goal is HP, a better Y-pipe or better tubing will be more cost effective.
For the money have a mandrel bend y-pipe made and have it ceramic coated, that will probably net you at least 10hp, far more than a cat would.
