Well, i went to the track today with my buddy for once. On the way down it was all highway and an empty road so we floored it. Of course mine cut off at 110mph and gave a horrible tranny noise, and he was blasting to almost 140mph in the Maxima. lol. It was a FUN night. I was happy with my first race too...i got a 15.855 on the first run, and for that I juts left it in Drive, and floored it. See images for more details. We are planning to go back next weekend. Dan maybe you might want to come up for this one?? I had people asking me about my car and what it ran. Some guy in a PT Cruiser turbo couldnt believe that a heavy car like that could run a 15.8. The second run (and last) was a 15.915. Thats probably because i put it into 2nd gear and left traction off and it spun a good bit on take off. I forgot to drive around the water box, i was too excited with everyone looking and my friends dad rooting at my car lol. He said you could hear the exhaust screaming towards the end. I guess thats because it was at redline into 3rd gear. Im gonna leave the chalk on the windshield for a few days. It looks kinda good. hehe. And for the vids: www.sitaliano.com/vids/95roratrack.wmv -- let me know how u like that one. Whats funny is on the 2nd run, i beat that stupid ricer civic. He was boasting how his "modified" VTEC could run mid 14's. I didnt buy it. All he had was exhaust, a huge body kit and wing...you know all the go-fast looks but no power. He actually put 2 grand into the engine too which is sad. I was looking at it and it had ported and polished heads -- ported this super this blahblah. LOL...I wonder what that felt like when a 4dr sedan blasts past you with only about $500 into performance work.

congrats on the great time! This should settle a few things. You mean that I have the slowest Aurora ever? lol. Maybe if mine had Steven's miles(history) and exhaust, it would be closer. Good job though Steven. Impressive times especially for a non-Autobahn. Though for Autobahn's it shifts into 3rd around the 1000ft mark. Probably doesn't help times much.

Always glad to hear an Aurora dust a Civic ;D
Hey Steven, was that some alternator whine in the background on the first run, or was it just my imagination?

that's what my car sounded like when i had my dynomax mufflers on. good job on the times, now you need an intake and they'd be faster

Cool. Glad you had fun. Your 60' time was better on your second run than on your first, so your launch obviously wasn't that bad. Putting it in 2 is the way to go, these cars really don't spin the tires hard enough that it matters much. Can you crop that 2nd timeslip a little? What was the weather like? I'm guessing it was probably nice and cool, a good day for drag racing. This week here has been nice and cool. I love fall weather! Dan, the bar's been set. Go get that 15.854 or less time slip!

Yeah. It snapped the shift harder on 2nd run with gear selector in 2, you can hear it. But my E/T was a little worse. Hmm....maybe its cause i powerbraked to 1500rpm? Or maybe its just because i didnt leave my hood open for the 2nd run. By the time i actually got to race on the 1st run was over 25 minutes of sitting with the hood open so itw as down to almost 140 degrees coolant temp. That was a great run. Car felt so strong leaving the staging area.
I dont think an intake would help me here though...the 80mm bored out throttle body would add 9-10 horses to wheels, as per that other guys dyno sheets with the 97 aurora. I forgot to even put in my K&N filter, its still sitting new in the box. Its such a pain to get to my airbox, that i dont feel like doing it.

What I'm saying is your launch wasn't worse, in spite of the spinning tires, as illustrated by your 60' time. In my opinion, heat makes a difference. Opening the hood as much as possible will definitely help.

Those on great vids and congrats on the times. I wish there was a track down here by me. Ive got a buddy with a gpgt and a 76 monte carlo that seem to not get the hint. By the way, have I ever mentioned how much I love the sound of our engines. I must have watched stevens video three or four times in a row just listening to the engine roar.

hehe, yup thats what i always thought. nothing like sound of a V8 -- its just so smooth and deep. I just don't care if imports can get 11's or whatever. If they sound like a weed whacker, who gives a crap? Most of the ones there were horrible in the exhaust department. One was almost deafening to the right of me. thx for the comments everyone

Yeah, i really hate the sounds of rice. Sounds like a bumble bee with a bad case of gas. A ton of people here in Ames have those stupid little cars with fart cans and it drives me nuts. I had one actually try and race me one day on my bike....Please. I also blew away a Tiburon in my moms old suburban, boy was he pissed.
I tell ya, I dont think ive heard a v8 that I like the sound of better than the aurora v8. Yeah granted my truck sounds nice with the exhaust system on it but nothing like the dohc sound. And after listening to all you guys that have exhaust systems on your roras im wanting one really bad. Just gotta get the money. Might as well look into it since all my exhaust components on that car are original anyway. Oh i cant wait ;D

I've been running pretty strong lately. Cecil is a hike for me, Atco is closer. But when did you say you were going again?
I would like to run two times with TC on and in drive vs TC off in 2nd. I get pretty good stopwatch times with the former. The throttle technique is also important. A big goose up front, then a milisecond fade with the rolling pedal to get a grab with the tires, then full bore, works best. This is very hard to time correctly and the TC actually helps a bit.

Ah, i used to be a firm believer in that method. I didnt do it this time however. I think just tossing it in drive, and Hammer Down on the light works best, as figured by the timeslips above. Maybe not though...there were a number of things i did differently on the 2nd run. Including forgetting to open my hood. I got lazy and just sat blasting music for 20 minutes.

Nice runs!! ;D Where/how did you have that video camera mounted on your dash? Nice job on the Civic too... was that same car that somehow dusted you in the first run?

nah that wasnt the same car. i saw him run before and he only got a 16.965. They arent meant to be fast anyways. i mounted the digital video cam using 2 thick strips of velcro. put the one side on dash let sit for 24 hours, then stick the opposite 2 pieces to the bottom of the video cam. I tested it before i went to the track and it didnt move or shake 1 bit. perfect. I may be going back to the track wednesday..we will see i guess. but thx for comments

yeah its an addiction among the many other things anymore. I hate that its about 40 miles out though, that really hurts. Im gonna do like 4 -5 runs if i can. hehe. Not like its any worse for the engine than flooring it on the street would be.. Its almost the same thing, and ive done that before anyway. Accelerate full blast first one out of a light to like 90mph

It's definitely addicting. You can do as little or as much prep to your car as you want. You can just show up and run if you want to. And it's pretty cheap. Being able to hammer your car up to 90 or so is a lot of fun, and something you really can't do anywhere else. Plus, you can get on the brakes pretty dang hard if you want also.
Autocrossing I think would also be a blast, but that requires more prep and more money to do. And there are fewer places to do it at.

i had an opertunity autocross when i was in florida, but i heard they're pretty competitive, and i didn't want to have my Aurora get trashed, with all the work and money i've put into it, especially since it is my only car too. that would be fun as hell though.

Yeah i wouldnt do that with my car. Maybe my dads....im trying to get him to go to the track with me next tmie. I think hes scared. I like my car cause its a Point N Shoot hot rod. You dont have to worry about correcting under/oversteer and burnouts or anything. Just line 'er up and PIN IT. lol. Also about prepping the car -- NAHHH. lol. I was gonna remove my stereo, speakers, amp, EVERYTHING. My friend was like "dont do that -- your gonna have a hard time getting that thing out of the staging area as it is...its a Peg-Leg". lol. He was shocked it ran a 15.8 as were a few other people that approached me. One guy was like "dudeeeeee man that big ass machine runs 15.8? Whats it got???" hehe. I was the only 4 door there too. The rest were rice rockets and a few 8-cylinder cars. At least with the V8 badge people that aren't too car smart will know its got the muscle to match the "big" factor.

Dang, if I ran a 15.8 (feasible for me w/exhaust and other things) I probably wouldn't be congratulated at the track. Too many SRT4 running 13's or Evo's running 12's or pro-drag Civic's in the 10's.
I've had an opportunity to AutoX. It was Mazda's event, where you practice in three different sections in Mazda 3's and 6's and then you get 2 shots at the complete track with the 3. I had a blast. Ran 33.3 and the Pro-Guy ran 29.5. It also gave me a new respect for Mazdas because we were tearing the crap out of them for about 12 hours and I didn't see one break. They just rotated them out for new tires and brought them back in. I when with my Dad (yes he ran a faster time) and he talked about on the way home that there's no way the Aurora would last maybe an hour out there.
