How interested would this community be in custom done modifications.
I used to be a member of the GP/3800 community when I owned my Oldsmobile Intrigue. They had a HUGE aftermarket for their motor, and along with that they had some very nice community members that did some good custom work for a fraction of the cost. I was wondering how many members of this community would be interested in similar work? The things they did consisted of...
-Custom Headers (slightly ported on the inlets and outlets, along with ceremic coating to reduce heat soaking, improve flow, and lower engine bay temperatures)
-Custom Downpipes (mendrill(sp?) bent 3" downpipes with the options of a welded on magnaflow legal cat converter and ceramic coating)
-Custom Throttle Bodys (ported and polished, for a fraction of the cost of an RMS one)
-Custom Heads (this one is a stretch as it would require these people to learn things they might not be willing to learn, but there were a lot of people from the community that did custom head work that showed good gains. They didnt push things so you wouldnt see any faulty parts produced, nor would you see HUGE gains, but we are a DOHC compaired to the 3800 SOHC)
Just throwing an idea out there. I am about to be a new Aurora owner and was going to ask these guys to help me out anyways, but I figured they might be interested in the extra pocket change if they were going to dabble in the NorthStar/Aurora parts.

i'd be interested in the first three, but yeah, removing the head is a lot of work. well, so is the exhaust manifolds, but yeah.

just for clarification, the 3800 is OHV. It's a pushrod engine. I personally wouldn't mind seeing some modifications for the shortstar engine. There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in custom performance modifications to the aurora from most members here though. (atleast that's the feeling I get from this board.)

I don't think there is as much interest in performance mods as there is in styling mods for these cars, because I think although they are powerful & great performing cars, they aremore luxurious than anything else.

Hrm, well, I've been told that our headers are pretty good stock, and wouldnt really see much gains from header work, however the ported and enlarged TB sounds nice, as well as the downpipe to complete my exhaust work.
Where abouts are you located?

I believe you can get worked-over heads and new cams from www.chrfab.com . They do a lot of mods on the Northstar for street rods and sand buggies.

The thing about the headers and a downpipe is that you pretty much need to either pull the engine, or drop the suspension cradle to remove them. The parts might be cheap, but the labor will be killer. Otherwise I'd seriously consider having mine extrude-honed. I would take an extrude-honed stock set over an aftermarket set for sure. This car is too nice to have issues with the pipe banging or other such fitment problems.

I have never looked inside of a Aurora engine bay to this date (havent bought mine yet, still searching for a good light blue or gold 2003 w/o final 500 package). Is it really that bad of a design where you would be REQUIRED to remove the engine to get to the headers and downpipe? Thats a little discouraging. Those are likely some of the biggest restrictions to the DOHC Northstar.

It's plenty fast enough already. :-)

No it aint -- 275-280 horses and as much torque would satisfy me pretty well. The cammer needs more beef to it. I think an 80mm TB with a full cat-back would open her up substantially.

I wish there was a higher demand for Aurora performance parts! I checked out that site above and I'm really thinking about those cams.

With aluminum heads/block, you run the risk of threads giving out on you and the labor is very high on these - thus reducing the demand on the mods.
