According to this article GM wants to build fuel cell powered cars, but admits that could take a long time to accomplish.

Not really. Hydrogen production uses more fossil fuel than using gasoline in internal combustion engines. And it's dirtier. Most modern cars are clean air generators with their emissions often cleaner than the ambient air.
