My wife is interested in starting a forum and would like your opinions how you like Proboards?? There are a number of "free" forum servers out there, but noticed you also use this one. Is it fairly easy to start and has there been anything negative about your experience, in other words something you would do differently if starting again!
Thanks for any input, it's greatly appreciated!!

I'm not familiar with any of the alternatives. The forum was here before I was a part of it. But, one thing I'd point out is all the "mods" to the basic board are javascript modifications. So they could start to be quite slow to render depending. And you are limited to a degree, plus if you are modifying the DOM, there is no guarantee that it won't change at some point.
Other than that, it's been pretty reliable. We've had very few outages and never lost data or anything.

Proboards has been a great (free) option. The ads are small and can be easily defeated by programs such as Adblock - that may not always be the case, but for now it is. The forums are pretty easy to set up and maintain, although getting recognized and gathering members takes awhile. I was not a founder of ACNA either (it was here before me), but as far as "doing things differently" it's really not an issue because everything can be modified quite easily. We've added and deleted categories quite a bit for instance, through the history of ACNA. Just makes for a better forum overall. You do lose some of the features & creativity that you'd have on a paid server using phpBB, but for a beginner I don't think you'd miss what's not there too much. What would be the topic of the forum she'd like to create? Just curious.

Proboards is a good free board but I like the power of running it myself on my own webspace. I run a number of other boards but of course that isn't free and it does take a little more skill to make it work right. Overall if you don't need/want your own server Proboards is an excellent choice.

Thanks for all your input!! Very helpful for those that have never delved into hosting a forum before. scottydlShe's a Michael Waltrip fan and the forums she's been on get pretty out of hand and brutal. The "bashers" come by just to say nasty things then go their merry way. She just wants to open a small forum for a group of fans that can have a "normal" conversation. Probably will name it something other than Michael Waltrip so it won't be discovered. Pretty much would like to have it by invitation only if you know what I mean. Besides if they get someone that doesn't play by "their" rules would like the option of deleting them!!
