First thing, don't think snake oil!! I have done my homework to make sure everything was on the up and up...
After spending 3 years researching oil, lubricants, and additives, I felt pretty comfortable adding this.
It is a simple formula, containing the additives normally found in motor oil in higher quantities, a synthetic carrier oil, and most notably, Molybdenum. Moly is a great friction lubricant, because it likes to bond to metal and provide a barrier between moving metal parts that try and squeeze oil away from the surfaces. Only real other effect is a slight thickening of the oil, but not enough to matter, given that what we consider a given oil weight actually has a bit of a true thickness range...
Ok, enough of the technical stuff... I put this in my new 'rora just over a week ago. Poured the whole bottle in, because it is only 15 ounces, which made the ratio ~2 ounces of VSOT to 1 quart oil. I have driven several decent highway trips, and a lot of city driving, too. All told, probably 550-650 miles. I have driven normally, and noticed a slight increase in mileage, but not enough to matter statistically.
Where I HAVE noticed an improvement is in a quieter startup (was already quiet, but now moreso), quieter idle, and the coolest part (pardon the pun), is lower operating temperature. The temperature is still the same high heat that it has been, so it is not that, and I have done nothing else to the car yet. In city traffic stop and go and sitting, the temp gauge no longer jumps to the ~220 mark. It only just rises above the 200 degree mark now.
I am still evaluating other possible effects, but was impressed enough to mention it here. I had been worried about the temp fluctuations, and now they are much less apparent. Makes me wonder whether the car really IS supposed to be considered normal with the temp swings. Kind of like Ford or DaimlerChrysler saying some of their engines are perfectly fine using a quart of oil every 750 to 1000 miles...
Anywho, I found my bottle of this stuff for ~$6 at Pep Boys here in Raleigh. I have heard rumors back and forth about some areas' AutoZones and Advance Autos also carrying this, but not the ones in my area.
