I use Extended drains intervals. The 3,000 miles (my Dad preached 2,000 miles) is an old set of standards brought by many years of keeping your engine in top running order (circa 1940s to the 1980s). Check an old owners manual from the 60s, 70s or even in the 80s and you will see 3,000 mile recommendations. Since the Standards of ASME has gotten stricter and the Emissions by the EPA gotten stricter, our cars/trucks run a lot cleaner today than ever before and with less fuel contamination to breakdown the motor oils, as in the past. The Owners manuals have kept up with the standards. If you are using a conventional Petroleum Motor Oil, then go by your drain intervals recommended by the Manufacturer.
Now on to how I have and do things:
My '97 GMC K-2500 Suburban has 180,000 miles on it and it has gone as far as 29,000 miles prior to changing oil. It has had Amsoil 10w-30 full Synthetic oil in it since it was new + 3000 miles (1st oil change). I have pulled construction trailers with equipment on. I also travel as far away as FL, PA, NJ and IA with it. I need to rely on it as much or more than anyone else has to. It has never let me down. I and the 'burb just returned from NJ with my 5th Aurora and a pop-up camper loaded on a 36' open car trailer. I am set to sample the oil in it here this week to see if I need to change the oil &/or filter. The last oil change was at 171,009 miles when I was in FL back in May '08.
My wife's car ('03 Jaguar) has had either the Series 3000, 0w-30 or the European 5w-40, both from Amsoil in it's Supercharged 4.2 V-8. It now has 101,000 miles, and has gone between 10 to 15,000 miles a year.
The longest drain interval I have ever gone is with my 1990 KW T-600 (CAT 3406 engine) Dump Truck. It had gone 5 years with 380,000 miles (with about 30% of those being off road miles) with NO oil change. It had a separate bypass filter to help keep the oil clean, but still after doing the Oil Samples to analyze the oil (via Oil Analysis, Inc in Shaumburg, IL), it surprised even me that all the truck needed after each oil sample was changing either the bypass filter and/or the normal full flow filter as recommended by Oil Analysis, Inc. and Amsoil. The oil was sampled at the end of each Construction Season (in November/December).
My Auroras and other cars have (over the years) had an Amsoil oil change yearly regardless of the miles put on them. Yes, I know that is a little extreme for the Pace Car (as it is only driven <1000 miles a year), but that car is worth the extra money.
My other trucks, cars and other Auroras all have had between 13 to 25,000 miles on them in a year.
:)And, No engine troubles from any of my vehicles, except when my 1st wife let a 1981 Olds Cutlass Cruiser w/350 diesel (7 quart system) run out of oil. As it used a quart of oil every 1,000 miles and she never thought to check it, needless to say after about 7,000 miles, the engine only needed a new crank when it spun the #4 main bearing. As a testament to Amsoil, the cylinders still had the cross hatch marks from the original machining and no wear lip at the top of the cylinder as one would have expected after 107,000 miles. Engine was re-assembled with most of the Original parts and drove another 60,000 miles before an accident took it from her.
