I just had an idea. How about we list mechanics, or garages, we trust/like by geographic area?
I've on several occasions wish I had one I trusted here in Michigan (I'm in Redford, just west of Detroit, and really don't have one myself).
I am suggesting that if you have a trusted mechanic, you reply with some basic information, so that we can all benefit. Over time I would hope that this list would become quite extensive.
ONLY post in this thread if you have information to share about mechanics in your area.
How about the following information as a suggestion:
STATE: CITY: MECHANICS(or GARAGE) NAME: ADDRESS: PHONE: WORK THEY CAN DO: (ie: body, electrical, engine, diagnosis, etc.) REPAIR (or DIAGNOSIS) THEY DID FOR YOU: WHY YOU LIKE THEM: (ie: fair price, honest work, good diagnosticians, warranty their work, etc.):

STATE: Minnesota CITY: Richfield MECHANICS(or GARAGE) NAME: JWL Enterprises Inc. ADDRESS: 7101 3rd Ave S PHONE: (612) 501-8539 WORK THEY CAN DO: Almost anything except major body work and balance/alignment. REPAIR (or DIAGNOSIS) THEY DID FOR YOU: I was actually employed for 5 years, the owner taught me all i know. WHY YOU LIKE THEM: Small shop, pride in work, VERY fair labor rate ($48/hr), cash discount.
The shop is run out of his home garage. I started working there when i was around 12-13. He taught me all that i know about what i do now, including some tricks of the trade. He's ASE certified, and has worked for several major GM dealers, as well as MSP airport on the heavy machinery. He's run his own business out of his home garage since 1979. If anyone needs a good mechanic in the twin cities area, give him a call.

This has been done before on a case-by-case basis in Product/Service Reviews. (Moving this thread over there.) Good idea to have them all in one place.

;D STATE: Minnesota CITY: Edina GARAGE NAME: Southdale Sinclair ADDRESS: 6996 France Ave S - Right next to the Galleria PHONE: (952) 922-5107 WORK THEY CAN DO: Everything except body work. REPAIR (or DIAGNOSIS) THEY DID FOR YOU:Brakes on my '93 Lumina. Discovered massive body filler and major suspension problems indicating an Aurora I was considering purchasing had been wrecked, despite clean CARFAX. Massive mistake avoided. Brakes on my '98 Monte Carlo. His recommondation to use ceramic brake pads vs conventional is the best car advice I've ever received. He has done all my normal maintenance for more than a decade. Tires, Oil changes, spark plugs, everything. WHY YOU LIKE THEM: Greg, the owner has been my mechanic for 13 years and he's been in business locally for 30 years. He is honest and ethical. He inspected the previous Auroras I was considering buying and found all the problems saving me untold thousands of dollars in possible repairs. When he gave me the green light on "Nadine", I knew I was good to go! Plus, he likes Auroras, so how bad can he be? ;0-)

STATE:WISCONSIN CITY:MEQUON MECHANICS(or GARAGE) NAME: SOMMERS PONTIAC BUICK SUBARU DEALER ADDRESS:7211 W Mequon Road PHONE: (866) 791-8437 WORK THEY CAN DO: THERE A FULL DEALER, WITH SMALL SHOP PRICES,they do it all from engine work to body and paint (paint and body work pricey, everything else cheap!) REPAIR (or DIAGNOSIS) THEY DID FOR YOU:replaced intermedaite steering shaft, did front rotors and pads, 2 front wheel bearings,AC servicing, i get all my work done here. WHY YOU LIKE THEM: (ie: fair price, honest work, good diagnosticians, warranty their work, etc.):i like them because of there "family orientated atmosphere, there prices are really cheap, there labour rate is about 90-90$ a hour and thats great for a dealer with certified gm techs, a local caddy dealer here is allmost 200 a hour for labor and this place is 2 times cheaper and does the same work. im in and out in now time and ive had no issues with any work ive had done there. just becareful with parts, they can be really pricey for certain things, your best bet is to buy your own part and have them install it. the only thing i did not bring in myself was the steering shaft, other then that everything else i brought in my self for a all out deal. check them out.

Great start to the TRUSTED MECHANICS list here so far. But there has to be more mechanics we all trust. (Selfishly, I was hoping to see some in the Detroit, MI area.) We do not need to limit this list to just mechanics we trust on our Auroras either. ANY trusted auto mechanic. or transmisssion, shop is welcome here. (I would think a trustworthy foreign mechanic would recommend us to a good Aurora mechanic if he knows of one. Also, odds are we all have other car makes in our families in addition to our Auroras). Thanks in advance for helping. I'd love to see a list that incudes mechanics in every state if we can do it! Matt
