I was wondering if someone could tell me how the tire pressure is sensed on 01's? When I started my car the other day I got a low tire pressure warning on the info center. I had a screw in the tire and it was repaired, tires all filled to within a pound or so of each other and when I started the car I got the warning again. Bad Sensor? I wouldn't think so since it was right the first time. Not thatbig of deal just wondering how it worked.
What tire pressure are people running out there. I have Cooper life line tires and I think they are at about 40 lbs right now. They are new and that is what the dealer put them at. Again, just wondering.

Personally, I would check that tire again. I had the exact thing happen on my '01 and the sensor was right every time.

Whenever you get a low pressure warning, the system has to be reset after the tire is pumped back up to the correct pressure. See page 6-51 in the 2001 owners' manual for the procedure. The tire pressure system works by measuring the tire diameter. When that figure falls below a certain size, the system thinks that the smaller diameter is due to low pressure, and sets off the warning. I use 36 lbs. in my 2001. _______________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

I run my tires in my 97 and 01 both at 32 psi. This seems low compared to you guys. Something I should know?

I run both of mine at 32 also.

What Marc said is basically right, except what it really measures is the revolutions the tire makes. I believe it must compare differences, but there is also something else to it or you wouldn't need to reset it. I'm not sure how it could tell based on revolutions per speed, as your speed is linked to the tire's height (in any particular gear). If they were all low, your car would think you are still going whatever speed, but in reality the car would be going slower than that...
Anyway, as everyone said, just reset the thing and that should clear it up. You should reset it anytime you change the pressures.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Will reset it this pm and hopefully never see it again. It does work though, not just a gimmick.

You have to reset it because it takes the wheel speed and compares it to that of the other tires. Once the 'reset' button is hit it remembers exactly how fast each tire was giong. So if you had one flat tire, and the rest were normal and you hit reset it'd read that flat tire as having normal pressure now because that's the reading it was at when the reset button was hit. (it knows that tire is moving slower because it's flat but it reads it as normal because you reset it at that setting.) Basically once any tire drops below 7 or so PSI since the last time the reset button was hit then the low tire pressure light will come on. Because of this, it is important to make sure when you reset it that all the tires are at the same relative tire pressure and have enough in them.

Custom88, thanks, reset the pressure after I read the post. Everything seems great now, no more warnings. I have never had a car with this many features (gadgets). Takes me awhile to get used to them.
