I have the opportunity to trade to some OEM 17" chrome wheels. The thing is, my non-chromes are basically flawless. The chromes are in nice shape, no scuffs on the face of the wheel, though the ridge by the tire has some scuffing on some.
Tires aren't a concern as I'll be getting new ones either way. But what is is that so many 2nd gen chromies seem to be failing. I don't want to have the chrome peeling off in a few years. Also, mine are in great shape, these are not quite as carefully cared for. Though they are from a car that is garaged and such, and we don't live in an area with heavy salting of roads in winter.
What would you do?

GO FOR THE CHROME WHEELS! They look so much nicer. I have chrome wheels on my 1999 and they really set the car off nicely. Keep the old wheels as backups.

I feel the chrome has been failing on those wheels because of the conditions they've been exposed to. LateKnight's or my old STS wheels show no signs of the chrome peeling nor does pretty much every other car around here with chrome wheels. And I feel confident that you could maintain them enough to keep them in good shape in your area. However, I think I like the painted silver look more with your paint color, same like I preferred silver on mushroom as well. Also, the chrome wheels seem a bit smaller looking as well.

Keep the old wheels as backups. That's not an option. I am not buying chrome wheels, this would be a trade based on my tires being in good shape. However, I think I like the painted silver look more with your paint color, same like I preferred silver on mushroom as well. Also, the chrome wheels seem a bit smaller looking as well. That's what I thought too. But I think they'd look good on a shiny car with shiny chrome and with clean/dressed tires. In that picture with the grey tires they don't look as good. I dunno...

If you wash the salt off every now and then, it will save the wheels for years to come. I like the rich chrome look more than the painted look for darker colors. Actually, if it were available, I'd prefer a brushed/polished look on your color.

The chrome would look fabulous. Doesn't Eva have the chrome? We all know how awesome her car looks. Plus with Bob's diligent cleaning practices, his Aurora would only look better with OE chromes!
Do it!

That is a tough offer to turn down... a straight-up trade? From your dad's car? Although you keep yours stockers in such good shape, and the car is always clean... they look great too. That should mean a lot coming from me too, since I'm such a chrome whore. I don't feel like I can vote here, because neither choice would be wrong. Go with your heart...

That is a tough offer to turn down... a straight-up trade? From your dad's car? That's right. He doesn't care about chrome, but he does care about buying some tires. His tires need replacing soon with 20+k more miles on them than mine. I am going to get new tires anyway because I don't like the MXV4+'s in snow. So I asked him if he wanted my old ones, and he asked about the mounting costs, etc. It occured to me a straight-up swap would save the second mounting/roadforce balance costs. I think his car would look good with either wheel, it's that greyish blue so a painted aluminum wheel would go well with the paint color. We'll see. My wife doesn't like chrome, but then again it ain't her car I didn't want chrome when we bought the car, I preferred the regular wheel. But times change... Funny I'm blinging the car so much now that it's not my sweetheart anymore.

I would take the chromes. And if you don't want to, send 'em my way so I can trade or buy them.

Tough call. I prefer the look of chrome on a light colored car. Dark colors look better with the regular wheel.

It is a tough call. On the other hand, if you don't like the chrome - its feel or look or whatever - you can always just pay a bit of $$ for mounting, balancing and such, and trade back.

On second thought, I think you should do it (the swap)... like mac said, you could always trade back later on if you don't like it. If you two decide on the same tires, it'll be REALLY easy to trade back!

Keep the regular wheels, I hate my chromies. Massive peeling problem on all 4 wheels.

Keep the regular wheels, I hate my chromies. Massive peeling problem on all 4 wheels. If you hate your chomes that much, you should let me buy 'em off of you. You're in Aurora, Il & I'm in Bolingbrook. What you think about that?

The chrome peeling problem is that on all Auroras or just second generation? My 1999 has chrome wheels and there is no peeling on them. (or am I just lucky?)

I think partly I am interested just because it's something different. I like my car with these wheels. If the chrome is not peeling, is it just a matter of time, or what? Or was there just have a bad batch of 'em or something?

With regular care, chrome wheels will last a long, long, long time and look fresh and healthy. Our SSEi has factory chromes and - after exchanging them upon delivery because the original set were pitted and chipped somehow - they still look factory fresh.

The reason for chromes to peel is lack of maintence/weather. My Chromes have NO peeling on them what-so-ever. This has to do with no salt & being florida wheels. If you take care of them, ie; wash off the salt and snow-slush, you should be fine.

Well it's done. I asked a buddy at work for his opinion, and I didn't even really get to the part about the chrome looking right with the color, etc. He said "sure I'd do it". When I asked why, he said "well it'll help your dad out", which was an excellent point. Two of his tires were very worn, one was a replacement dated '03, and another had a lot of tread in spite of the '00 date code. So who knows what's up with them. Mine are in a bit more even shape than his and should have another 20k or more on them (a couple of years or more at the rate he drives it). One of his leaks also. Anyway, the chrome looks great. I cleaned up two of them and will do the other two this afternoon. I pulled each wheel off my car and washed it front and back, then polished the front. Maybe one day I'll get a flitz ball or something to quickly polish the back. Here they are now though on the polished side. It's raining out, so garage shots are all you'll get:

I've had chrome wheels over the past couple decades and have never run into this problem with them before, same goes for my Intrigue. I have talked to a couple of different wheel people who all have said that they only dip them once which gives a really thin layer of chrome(GM being cheap). I would have to agree with them because when I went to clean off the flaking chrome it cut through my hand like a hot knife through butter.

I have an 02 Second Gen and I have the beginings of a peeling problem on 2/4 of my rims. Any thoughts on how to stop this before it becomes a major issue? Any thought would be appreciated.

I think just keeping them clean is the way to keep it from getting worse. It seems salt is what does it.
I think these wheels are definitely not triple-dipped, though. Because that would be copper, then nickel, then chrome. And the peel doesn't look like copper on the backside.

theres a place where i live that can do wheels, emblems, etc. in any color you want and it still has that chrome appearance. ie: if your car is green you can get green looking chrome wheels to match. its kinda neat but not my style. they have red, purple, orange, yellow, green, blue, gold, etc.
