As most of you know, I've been having vibration issues with my Yoko Avids ever since I bought them. I have had them force-balanced several times without much success. At least 8 mechanics (including aurorabrain) have inspected the front and rear suspension. My rotors have been replaced several times. I just replaced my front wheel bearings. I have basically rebuilt the entire drivetrain trying to solve this issue ...
Yesterday, I parked the car to inspect my wheel weights after my 6th balance. I noticed that my tires have considerable dry rot. I checked all the tires and they have the same issue inside the threads and walls.
I called TireRack to check if this issue is covered by the manufacturer's warranty. They informed me that I need to stop by at a Discount Tire store to have the tires inspected. Most likely they will replaced all my tires under warranty and hopefully my wheel shake will be gone.
By the way, my tires are 14,000 miles old. I was informed that tires have a DOT number to identify their manufacturing date. Most manufacturers recommend to replace tires within 5 years regardless of the amount of miles.
Maybe I got old tires???

Sorry you are having so much trouble but hopefully this will correct it ! Let us know if they take good care of you. I guess that is why, on a purchase like this, I would just buy locally.

Sorry you are having so much trouble but hopefully this will correct it ! Let us know if they take good care of you. I guess that is why, on a purchase like this, I would just buy locally. I think that's how I'm going to purchase tires from now on. TireRack customer service has been pretty good, but I have doubts about their reviews. I have bought tires that have had great reviews and I have had nothing but trouble with them. I bought some Avons from my 04 GTO (RIP) thinking that I was getting a good euro tire. After I got the tires, I realize that Cooper bought the Avon Tyre Company and most Avons are made in Cooper factories. Those tires lasted 10k miles and lost their balance every 3k miles. I never took that car to the track and it was babied. These Yokos have been nothing but trouble. They had great reviews, but if you read the low ratings, it's like everyone experienced the same loud noise and balance issues. Sorry for the vent ... G

I replaced my tires a few months ago because of cracking and splitting. The tires had plenty of tread but they were rotting from age. I could even see cords in some of the cracks!
If you buy new tire check the week/year manufactured code on the tire. If the code says "2108" the tire was made in the 21st week of 2008. (Don't buy a tire more than 6 months old)

Good news ...
I visited a Discount Tire today and Yokohama is going to replace my tires. I will be getting a $375 credit towards a new tire purchase. I'm doing some research, but I'm probably going to choose the Michelin Primacy tires. I really wanted to get V-rated tires, but they are getting really difficult to find in our size. These Michelins are H-rated which are just fine too ...

Well I still don't have my tires yet ...
I was quoted $147 for the Michelin Primacys (matched Tire Rack price) in the deal. When I visited the store today to get the tires installed, I requested the final price of the entire purchase. I was told that I couldn't get matched price from tire rack (which they agreeded on the day before) because I was getting a discount because I was returning the old tires. The manager accused me of "double dipping" on the price. I didn't even bother trying to get the quote that I was given before and I just walked away.
I'm trying to figure out what to do, G

Maybe the difference in price has to do with an adjusted refund since you did put 14K miles on the old tires. idk, just a thought.

ever try wal-mart and their Nexen brands? you gotta remember some of these no-name brands are owned by bigger company's and use their current stuff on no-names just as much as it with the logo of it on.

No I haven't ... the only issue is that only an yokohama authorized dealer can give me an instant refund on my tires. I gotta ship back the old tires if I buy the new tires somewhere else. Even by doing that, Tire Rack doesn't guarantee that I will get a refund. G

Sorry to hear you're having problems with the Yoko Avids. I'm on my 2nd set on my 442 and really like the tire (first set lasted about 35K before I wore 'em almost bald - I do like driving that car!). My 'rora came with no-names on it but was thinking of putting Avids on when it needs tires. Guess now I should think twice about that.
I have had the occassional similar problem with other tire brands (usually just one of a set, never the whole set) and was in the same boat as you at those times - I had to get it replaced at a brand authorized dealer in order to get a pro-rated refund/discount. At risk of sparking a tire war, I never had a problem with Goodyear tires and I used them almost exclusively over the years unless a car came with another brand. I only went with the Yokos because GY stopped making an outline while letter tire that fit the 442. Just my 2 cents.

I bought a set of Goodyear GT-HRs and I couldn't be happier with them. You might want to check them out.

I've got the avid tourings on my cavalier and i love them, other than the fact that they like to "talk" to you around corners well before they lose grip. Wonderful in the rain, however. Sounds like you got a bad set, happens to everyone sometimes.

I just got my tires installed and all I can say is wow ...
I love these Michelin Primacys. I was also able to pinpoint the slight wheel shake that has been bugging me for a year now. After the force balance, the technician informed me that one of my rims is bent. I've seen the slight bend before, but didn't think it was bad enough to cause an issue. It turns out that my tires had road balance numbers of 11-13 on 3 rims and 26 in the bent one. I'm buying a good used rim tomorrow.
Thanks for all the advice, G
