Well, I was afraid of it happening and it did. My chrome wheels on the Aurora have rusted only mid-way into the winter and look pretty bad. all around the spoke-edges are thick patches of rust. I tried cleaning them and it did not come off. also tried some rim polish and the rust is still there.. ideas? the rims look BAD rusted like this.

Is this because of the chrome? Mine haven't rusted and it's used throughout the winter months in the snow... (non-chrome 16")
Doesn't WD40 get rid of rust?

well, you'll just need to polish it out. The wheel itself is aluminum, so the rust is on/in the chrome. You might try something like Mother's powerball or something. I'd be hesitant to try sanding, though.

The chromes are his only wheels.

My stock wheels are chrome steve. I have the chrome stockers, or I have these in my garage from my Riv. Here's the stockers as they look today. Notice the rust all along the lip of the wheels. It's especially bad at the base of the spokes

Looks more like the rust is coming from the back of the rim? Should polish out with any type of polish.

I agree with kobrak. It looks like it is surface rust staining from the rotors or something. What did you say you tried to clean it with?
BTW, nice shot of the Riv, with the horizon reflection in the quarter panel.

That should most definitely come off; try polishing it out with some "Nevr-Dull" wadding polish made by Eagle One. I've had really good luck with that stuff on various auto and non-auto applications. Here's a link so you know what it looks like... www.eagleone.com/pages/products/product.asp?itemid=1006&cat=5006Good Luck... -Shawn

Dan I've defeated rust like that two ways... with a general chrome polish like Mother's and a LOT of elbow grease, and/or with a few SOS pads if you need something a little abrasive. The soaped steel wool works AMAZINGLY well with a little water, and a box of pads is super-cheap. I'm going to move this to "Exterior", since it's a good discussion topic for any chromies...

Well Dan, gonna give you the best advice I can think of. As with having a motorcycle with lots of chrome and a truck with chrome bumpers ive tried several chrome polishes. I have Meguiars but its only good for polishing. You need to get a chrome polish and rust remover. Dont know how you feel about Turtle Wax but it worked really well for me.
Clean the wheels and then apply a healthy portion of polish. Take an old toothbrush and really work the affected area and then let dry to dull haze just like wax. Remove and repeat if necessary. It took me about 4 coats but I was able to remove rust from the bumpers on my truck that had been building up for atleast 7 years.
Scotty's method with SOS will work too but youll need some sort of clear coat to go back over the spot to help prevent further incidents.

Dan, what is the green tarp next to your tire? Is that a body bag?

heh. naw. the green tarp is attached to the ceiling in the garage I park in, and it goes down to the floor around the hood of my car. My cat loves to jump on my car and since I put that up 2 years ago, he hasn't done it since.. The tarp goes to just before myside mirrors on each side, and in front of the car as well.

Are you sure its rust, I have a '88 Lebaron Turbo1 with the Alloy "Eggshell Eheels", and it has this discoloration issue. I've used Mothers, wet sanding, polishing compounds till my elbows call it quits. It looks almost like the clearcoat is coming off. My solution, screw it, they can't steal what like hell. Haven't really looked at my 'o1 3.5 whels, so not sure if clear coated.

Looks awesome. Dan, did it take much effort?

not really. just apply the paste then wipe it off. that's about it. You have to do some light scrubbing, but nothing hard at all. It wasn't any harder to apply, or remove, than paste-wax.

Hehehe, that screenshot brings back memories. Very nice work with the rims there, looks like the Mother's did just the trick!
