well if you have access to a shop to work in than i would go ahead and do head gaskets and reseal the block. Replace the oil manifold plate replace the front cover gasket, crank seal, rear main seal. Replace the water crossover gaskets and the coolant kwik connect on the back of the crossover. Also don't forget the trans filter in the side cover. if you do all that it will be smooth sailing for a long long time and if you have any specific questions feel free to ask i have done the swap on my own car and it went very well good luck ;D

Moved to Aurora Performance, simply because all the other 4.6 discussions are there.

Also, who here has actually done the swap? Any complications or hangups I should know about? Most of the work will be done by a local shop, so is there anything they should know? I know they've never put a 4.6 in an Aurora before.

Many claim to have done the swap but so far I have seen no proof whatsoever This is exactly what I was thinking. I've been scouring this site for pics of the swap, but to no avail. I'm beginning to have doubts about this... Here's the deal. I've already bought the engine and transmission from a '96 Sedan DeVille. I'm not just talking about doing the swap; I'm actually going through with this. The problem is that I've never attempted anything like this before, and I only have access to a shop with a lift for a day or two. Which means I'll probably end up paying a shop to do this for me; which will be a very expensive venture. If anyone has made false claims about performing the swap, I need to know now. I can't afford to throw money at something that is not going to be a direct swap. I've been talking with my regular mechanic, and I feel like I'm twisting his arm to get him to do this. Don't get me wrong- I'm grateful for all the advice and expertise that the members of this club have to offer; BUT I would also appreciate complete honesty and transparency when it comes to this subject.

Someone care to bring those pictures in here somehow?
It's a 95? How did he manage to tune it?
I'm looking at doing something serious to mine, either cams out of a Vin 9 or this swap if possible...

I don't know what's the big deal about a better pic ... the engine looks/fits the same. The only visible difference is the valve covers. Auroraguy95's engine doesn't have any engine cover, but if I'm not mistaken, you can also install the Caddy engine cover on the 4.0.

I'll be sure and post some pics when my swap is all done.
(Which will hopefully be in a couple weeks.)

Update: This project is still in the works... I'm hoping to get this started next week. If everything goes smoothly, I'll have the 275hp N* mated to the Autobahn package by the end of next week. Here's hoping the local shop I'm dealing with doesn't keep dragging their feet on this. I've been waiting for months now...

MONTHS!!! tell them to pretend they're just replacing the engine, that should ease their mind about any problems they THINK they might encounter.

Yeah, I know it's ridiculous... The guy is sort of a friend of the family, and owns his own shop. He thinks he's doing me a favor by doing work for me off the books. The only problem is that I have to wait for him to have free time to do the work. I know I'll get a deal on the labor costs, but I'm sick of waiting.

Here is the pic that was posted its my car and the only visible difference is the front valve cover. it has been done So what is the current status with it? Have you had a chance to run against a regular Aurora? I am surprised you didn't fix the head bolts before you installed it. But, I can understand. I would have been in a hurry, too. What does the rest of your Aurora look like? You should post some more pictures in the showroom.

Yes. I've been posting this for months... BECAUSE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR MONTHS! If you want pics of the '96 Deville, you're out of luck. The engine & transmission were taken out two weeks ago, and the rest of the car was returned to the owner. So I guess nobody is going to believe me. Boo Hoo. I really don't care. If anyone is really concerned about whether or not I'm telling the truth, they can call the shop that's doing the work. The owner's name is Steve. The name of the shop is Steve Marten Auto LLC in Schofield, WI. The shop's phone number is 715-355-9585. Call and ask Steve what he's doing to Josh Mulder's '99 Aurora. All I was saying is that IF my swap works, I would suggest that as an option for anyone. Although I noticed that the member who started this thread has an '01. I don't think anyone has ever claimed to have performed a swap in a 2nd Gen. So a proven 4.6 swap in a 1st Gen wouldn't really matter in this situation. Ha ha ha! I can understand, posting pictures of a story is difficult.

Please do. I hope someone does. I don't see what's so hard for Randy to believe. That someone is actually stupid enough to trust the claims on this forum? I guess I'm just that stupid. I'm taking Aurorabrain's posts and PM's at face value. Everything else he has posted has been right on, so I'm trusting his advice on this as well. If the whole 4.6 swap ends up being a myth, then I'm the sucker. I'm the one having my car ripped apart by a shop to have this done. This is not about if it is possible or not. It is about if you are doing it or not. Just post some pictures.

Here are a few pics of the 4.6 from the DeVille, and a picture showing both the engine and my car in the shop. I can also post more pics once the whole thing is over with. So, as I have said before, this is happening. Albeit, not anywhere as soon as I had hoped; but it's happening. Now Steve says it won't be done tomorrow. I know he's been sick all week, so I'm not gonna talk down on him. But, man; it's been forever! I really hope to be driving my Aurora by this time next week.

Sweet pictures! I am jealous! Thanks for posting. You may not think this is a big deal, but it is. This is the most pictures of a 4.6 swap that has ever been posted.
I know it is a pain, but you should see if you can get some more pics of the install in progress. You have already proved yourself, so it's not about that, it is just neat to see it all happen.
How many miles are on the engine you are putting in? Did you consider doing any of the things auroraguy95 suggested at the top of the thread? If you can't do all, you should at least consider changing the trans side filter while you have it out.

The 4.6 that's going in has 89,000 on it. I don't know how much of Auroraguy's suggestions I will be able to accomplish, although I will be changing the trans side filter for sure.
I'll see how many more pics I can get before it's done. (Between my hours at work, and the shops hours, it's tough getting there while they're open.)
I will definitely post photos/videos when it's all done. I'm really not sure how it will sound; since I'm keeping everything stock as far as exhaust goes.

If you need some PCM work let me know also. I have seen what happens when you run a 4.6L on a 4.0L program. I hope this is a 1996 yes?

Well, it's all done. I just picked her up and drove her back from the shop. Wow, it's great to have my Aurora back. I wish I could have gotten more photos of the swap in progress, but I've just been too busy at work lately. I will be posting pictures of the finished product very soon.
After I get a chance to take her out for a nice long drive, I'll post my reaction to the swap. My drive from the shop back to work was barely a mile, and the engine didn't even have a chance to warm up.
ajxtcman- I've got to ask; what problems do you foresee? To answer your question, yes- it was an engine and transmission swap from a '96 DeVille Concours into a '99 Aurora Autobahn.
