I've thought this might look good at times, but then other times I'm not sure. This picture brought it to my attention again. What do you think the 2nd Gen would look like with the 'chrome' sections of the headlights darker, like what you see in this picture. I don't mean the reflective parts of the headlight, but the chrome surrounding it.. I'm unsure.

Are you sure that's darkened? It just looks like it normally does when in a dark area. What would you do, black-chrome it? Otherwise you'd have to go with a color, and that wouldn't look good.
Elan, the area in the headlight assembly, but between the bulb areas. Like the chrome between the low and high beam.

elan, you can see the difference here: BTW, I don't plan on doing this. Just curious what it could look like if the chrome portions were darkened a gloss black kind of like how the Impala lights are dark, Bonneville, etc.

It still just looks like lighting/angle differences. Mine look like that white car sometimes. Did they paint them?

I like it! Defines everything nicely. Helps match the lower grille area thingy's on 2nd Gen with lighter colors. Can only like so much better on a black one. I've seen the "black-out" headlights on numerous VW's and a top of the line new Expedition and all have looked good. If I had a 2nd Gen. I'd consider it.

Thanks for the explanation and pic Dan and Bob. I like the darkening effect.

I think it could go either way... although (and some responses of this thread prove) it may be one of those mods you spend lots of time on, but nobody notices. Gotta factor that in to the "should I?" decision...

no way IMO. the chrome looks so much better and classy. also give the front end a little euro-styling.

eh, it's one of those things that if all Auroras came stock with the dark option, modders would be chroming it and saying "woah, it matches, sweet" and the rest of the critics would be like "nah, I like it stock" You know how everyone always love the Euro turn signals here? Over there, they sell "American" style ones.. the grass is always greener on the other side

Any interest here? I know they didn't exactly come out black... More like the Lexus badges (a dark platinum finish). Which I like.

Definitely. It looks like the 2nd Gen ad where they mention the magnesium core support... I know Bob has to have/seen it...

Definitely. It looks like the 2nd Gen ad where they mention the magnesium core support... I know Bob has to have/seen it... Is that the one where they have all of the forward lights illuminated? I always liked that one, even though the picture made the lights look extremely yellow. I think it looks pretty nice. I've been tracking some Japanese-market lights for my Galant. They look the same, but are one-piece glass (instead of the USDM plastic) and have a dark plastic structure inside that better defines the different elements/bulbs. JDM: USDM:

Played around with another Aurora picture... I'm starting to like this idea, to tell you the truth. It looks pretty nice. Before: After:

Too much free time and a copy of Paint Shop Pro... I just cut out the lights, paste as new image, darken them to around -120 (w/ contrast at 40 or so), put 'em back in the original picture, then cut out each individual lighting element from a second original copy and throw them in. Not too bad... This is about the extend of my photoshop skills.

Nice PS job! Seeing that virtual mod on Dan's color, I gotta say I like the factory "chrome" better. The darkened reflector borders look good on the silver one above and would probably fit other dark colors too... but for light shades I think the features should be kept light and reflective also.

I like it, and remember that on a real car it wouldn't be as dark.
I would do it if I had an Aurora.
