I am getting an Evaporative CEK code, and want to try replacing a few things. Is there a way to clear the CEL without using a scanner? I hate stopping by AutoZone all the time.

Best way is to buy your own scanner. I bought one for $129.00 that scans and clears the codes. Best investment I ever made!

The car can clear the check engine light by itself, as such: When you start and stop 3 times, if the PCM detects no problem, the check engine light will go out on the 4th start. If after 40 start & stop cycles, if no trouble comes up, the code will then be cleared from the PCM's memory. This according to pg. 6-1532 of the 2001 shop manual.

Well I was all set to buy the scanner today, went out this morning an the light was off. I had cleaned the rust off off the gas filler, and put a little grease on the caps gasket, must have done the trick. I remember reading that if after 4 driving cycles the problem does not return, the light will go out, guess they were right. Oh well, guess I will buy my new toy the next time.

I'm sure you can clear all of the codes by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes. Worked for me several times, on various cars.

Yeah, I thought it would too. I was disconnected for more than an hour, and it did not reset it.

Cheap scanners cost like $40.00. Just buy one of those and it will tell you the basic codes and clear if you like. I think you will find it to be a good investment.

yeah, no sense getting a $120 one. I got a $35 one off ebay that reads and clears codes, it just displays the code's number on the screen and you look it up to see what it is. definitely a good investment.
