I found this and thought it looked interesting. (Thanks scottydl!) He says he has developed a method of fixing the head bolts without inserts. And they seem to have a pretty good deal on fixing Northstars, with warranty.

If no inserts are used, then my guess is that larger diameter head bolts replace the stock ones.

Looks kinda nice, but is more expensive for the kit than the NS300L set. It's $190 for a set of the inserts i use, and if you buy 3+ at a time its more like $145. The tools are a 1 time buy.

I found this and thought it looked interesting. (Thanks scottydl!) Nice hotlink. What would the advantage be (if any) of fixing head bolts without inserts?

Sounds like a sweet and proven setup.

Well studs should be a lot stronger than something like timeserts or helicoils (or head bolts on a block that didn't have this weakness).
However it's really not that different. You are inserting studs instead of the timesert or helicoil. I'd think studs would be more costly too. And I'd guess most people do headgaskets maybe once or twice, you aren't pulling heads off all the time.
Cool to see some other options out there though. And I suppose if you wanted to boost the engine or something, studs would be a great option to have.

I also thought the r&r and rebuild wasn't to bad of a price. I know they are probably not as hard to find in that area, but a lot of mechanics don't want to tackle a Northstar job like this. And I thought he had a pretty good guarantee.
" We do head gasket repairs on Cadillac Northstar / Oldsmobile Aurora engines! For only $1,500, The engine gets pulled out of your car, both gaskets get replaced and the engine block gets new custom cylinder head bolts, custom machined and exclusive to our shop. Then your engine is re-installed in your car with fresh oil, filter, and coolant. The head gasket repair is guaranteed for 50,000 kms (31,000 miles) or 2 years, which ever comes first."
