I got in my 1st reportable accident in 14 years today . It was snowing pretty hard and I slid right through a red light on an over pass and broadsided a car coming off the freeway. Luckily I was only going between 5-10mph and no one got hurt. The abs was completely useless. I only have about $700 damage to the Aurora, the other car was an Intrigue and was not driveable. The drivers door and fender are pretty bashed in and it looked like there was some suspension damage since the front wheel seemed to be tilted in pretty far at the top. Of course it is my fault because I slid through the red light, but as soon as I saw the light turning and new I was sliding I started to honk the horn to keep the cars on the off ramp from pulling out.Every car except the one I hit saw me and stayed stopped. The girl was talking on her cell phone and didn't see me until she was in the intersection. The cop that was there was cool because he knew where I work but said I would probably get a ticket for failure to maintain control. This blows, gonna cost me around $700 for the ticket and my deductible.

Man, that sucks. At least everyone was ok and the Aurora didn't fare too bad. They do well in collisions. How old was the other car? Also, since you aren't a teenage driver, your insurance rates shouldn't jump too much.

Not sure what year the other cars was.It appeared to be a late 90's Intrigue and my agent said my rates shouldn't go up at all since I have never had a claim before and I have 2 cars,my house and a very large umbrella policy with them.

That's the most important part. $700 may seem bad now but it is way better than what a rate increase would get you for in the long run. I'm 17 and so far have managed to keep my record clear but I know if anything happens I'm going to be out thousands for the rate increase alone.

Wow - THAT'LL ruin your day, huh? (and 14-year driving record) - sorry to hear that, but as everyone says: it's great that no one was hurt - everything else is relatively bearable. Good luck sorting it all out. ...talking on cell phones while driving strikes again........jeez Ah, yes...scratch just about any boneheaded surface, and that's what you'll find. Even though it was "officially" your fault, was the other driver at least reprimanded for yakking while driving (in a SNOWstorm, no less)? Did she admit to this during the report? Another case of Olds Olds violence... ;D ;D ;D That's really clever!

Sorry to hear that, but really glad you are all ok! Driving was crazy enough down here and I know you all in Wisconsin were suppose to get it much worse. Hope everything works out well for you.

I am not sure she mentioned it in the report, but I told the officer it appeared she was on the phone when she turned her head.
And yes motbooz, I am a medic and checked for injuries 1st thing then called the pd.
I went out this morning to shovel and it looks like we got about 10-12 inches, but it was the light fluffy kind so it was easy to shovel but made roads really slick.

That seriously blows. Good to hear there isn't tooooo much damage to the 'rora. Any damage is bad damage. Nobody was seriously hurt which is the main thing. I almost nailed a truck yesterday. He was turning into a parking lot and tried to beat me, however the roads were like ice and there was definitely not enough time for him to turn. In the blink of an eye I slammed the brakes and veered to the left around his back end, quickly realizing that was a bad idea because there was traffic behind him I jammed on the brakes again and threw the wheel as hard and as fast as I could the other direction and slid around the guy. It all happened so quickly there was nothing that I could do, not even a horn honk. Bad day for any Oldsmobile on the road! Another case of Olds on Olds violence... MY EXACT THOUGHTS. if we must hit someone, at least hit a ford!

Dang, that's bad news! Thankfully it was a low speed crash to avoid injury to anyone and sounds like the Aurora did pretty good. Another case of Olds on Olds violence... MY EXACT THOUGHTS. if we must hit someone, at least hit a ford! 15years ago sure, but I'd aim for a Toyota nowadays....

Glad to hear everyone is well, it could have been worse.

That sucks. Hopefully it'll work itself out. Speaking of which. I was also almost in an accident, thanks to some lady who signaled to me it was clear when it was NOT! I was almost T-Boned (pass side) by a Maxima doing around 50mph.

It is certainly a blessing no one was seriously injured.
I know you are actually at fault but that does not excuse the inattentiveness of the other driver. Its hard to be a "defensive" driver (which is our responsibility) when you are on the cell phone. I am surprised that she wasn’t sited with being a contributing factor to the accident. After all, the other vehicles took evasive action and stopped when they saw what was about to happen.
BTW - Did your air bag deploy ? That would add another $800 or so to your repair list.

Actually the airbag did not deploy, so after speaking to my insurance agent and all that junk I have decided not to have her repaired right now. I did not know that my liability insurance does not have a deductible, so it really is not worth it financially. I have $500 deductible and the cost of repairs was $670 and $420 of that was labor. I can do the work my self for much less than that, and with WI dropping the front plate law I am just going to take the front plate holder off entirely. I will fix the rest of it in spring since it really isn't noticable unless you know what you are looking for. I will snap some pics tommorrow though, didn't think to take some of her car.
Does anyone know what the impact speed for airbag deployment is? I am going to try and use that to my advantage in court if I get a citation. Hopefully the cop doesn't issue.

Airbag deployment speed is generally around 20mph from what I learned years ago. That may differ from model to model, although I'd imagine it would still be in that range. "Smart" airbag systems react differently, but that's a new car feature that none of our Auroras have.

A friend of mine has a 2003 Deville and he says his will deploy if greater than a 5mph impact, I don't think he has ever tested this out though. Even if ours are 20mph rated then i at least have some proof that I was going under 20mph in a 35mph zone.

my daughters did not go off either, fwiw, the insurance adjuster said it has to be completely head on

It was completely head-on right into the cars passenger door.

Since mine is a 97 also, I hope that does not mean that the older the cars airbags the less likely they are to work. I heard somewhere (couldnt tell you where) that they need to be serviced after 10 years. However, I posed this question to all of you some time ago and no one had heard this.
Edit - when my daughter totaled her car it was on ice. I think that helps to decrease the impact some since the cars sort of glide after they hit. Certainly, dry pavement would be much worse.

Early airbags were recommended to be serviced after 10 years but no one knew for sure what, if any problems there would be. I don't believe there is any recommended servicing on them anymore unless there is a problem that sets a code.

I bet I saw that on my 95 Villager! I think it was posted on the visor. not a problem any more, they worked beautifully! my son hit a (huge) tree probably at 40mph or more (the grille was at least 25 - 30 feet in front of the car), he had only a scratch on one finger!
