Going to change the oil in the classic this weekend. I have been thinking for quite some time I would like try running synthetic. I have read and heard mixed reviews about switching to synthetic oil on high mileage engines. Not to do it. To use a 50/50 mix conventional/synthetic the first time. Last but not least, it is okay, take the plunge full synthetic. I do have the dare I say "normal" 1/2-1 qt. loss between changes (~ 2-3k between changes). I am sure this has been brought up several times. I would just like to know what you all think/recommend about this topic. Also, a preference on synthetic oil if I do choose to or am able to go the synthetic route. Thanks in advance! BTW, sorry if this is a beat topic!

sall--from what i understand on the conventional-to-synthetic switch: the theory (or fear) is the detergent powers in synthetic are "supposed" to be much better than conventional and therefore when they are introduced to an older engine run strictly on conventional oils, the sludge holding back some possible leaks gets broken up and the engine suffers from leaks it didn't have before. now saying that, i personally do not see a problem going full synthetic especially if you have been vigilant in previous oil change schedules--i.e. no time for broken-down oil to build up sludge.
i did this switch with my higher mileage, no-leaks, truck (i know it's not the same engine) with absolutely zero problems. my only argument against switching is that because our engines use/leak so much the cost-benefit ratio is only marginal in my humble opinion. modern conventionals are really good these days.
as for recommendations--well the opinions are going to vary widely here. my truck-usually gets castrol synthetic while my aurora gets regular castrol gts at the specified intervals.
hope this helps! sorry for the long-winded reply, but i wanted to ensure i explained myself fully..as always opinions/experiences will vary! good luck!

do as I do and run Valvoline max life synthetic BLEND! I've ran it now twice in my car and has comepletely stopped all leaks. Plus when I changed my oil day before yesterday, I was amzed by the nasty stuff I strained out...more nasties than any other oil has produced.
Its my personal belief that the synthetic removed the nasties. do the synthetic blend to make yourself feel more comfortable than switch over to max life full synthetic (or mobil 1) I prefer valvoline,
You should have no problems, classics love synthetic

Castrol says right on there site along with any other sites that switching to Synthetic is perfectly fine at any mileage and infact you can mix/switch back at anytime

Thanks for the responses guys! I ended up using Valvoline Max Life Synthetic Blend. AutoZone had it on sale for $19.99 for 5.28 qts. and Purolator Pure One filter. I ended buying two of the deals. So, next oil change I already have the filter and almost enough oil for another change. This is my first venture with synthetic oil in the Classic. I will be keeping an eye out for leaks in the next few days/weeks.

No new leaking that I can see.

Speaking of, you guys see the new add for Castrol?, 8 times more effective than Mobil 1? Interesting.

I am pretty sure max life is 3000 recommended...

I am pretty sure max life is 3000 recommended... oh it is, but the general consensus on here is that companies are rating the oils at 3k just to be safe, when in fact, 3k was used YEEEAAARRRSSS ago when engines werent as clean running as ours. Believe me I wanted to pull mine at 3k but decided against it just due to the fact of how remarkably clean it was. 5k is about all I would try to squeeze out of the max life. I guess if I had the money and could afford to put synthetic in my car every three thousand miles (which at this rate would be once a month) I would do it, but I need to stretch my money as tight as possible, and I certainly see no issues with stretching the life of my oil either. But if you are worried about that but dont have the time/money to do the change right at 3k I suggest a bottle of engine honey, we've ran it in our cars for years and you can usually guestimate about an extra 500 miles on the oil it sort of "reconditions" to say. maybe its motor honey...one of the two. Its got a bee on the front ;D

and if you go by the DIC it works out to about 5,000 And that's with the car thinking it has dino oil in it... with the extra protection of synthetic, it's likely you can go MUCH longer between oil changes.

You could buy one quart of synth, and 7 of regular, and come out ahead money-wise, and synth percentage-wise. That's not a bad deal with the filter though. But Mobil 1 at Walmart for example is $21 for 5 quarts regular price.

I always think those blends are kinda a rip. They are usually about 5% synthetic. Hmm, I never considered that before. I always kinda naively thought it would be a 50/50 mix. Not that I buy the stuff anyway, I'll stick with full synthetic. Good reminder to always check the bottle so you know what you're buying though.

Where are you getting the statistic for 5% synthetic oil in synthetic blend oil? Everything I read says up to 30% synthetic in a synthetic blend. I know that up to 30% could mean it only has 5%. Is there anywhere I can see a breakdown of what percentage of synthetic oil is in a synthetic blend? If max life only has 5%, I will definately go with a 50/50 blend or a full sythetic.

I believe they had to be at least 5% to be labeled as a blend. When those oils first started appearing, that is how most of them were. It looks like MaxLife is in fact 30% synthetic according to Valvoline's website.

Alright, well I guess that is not too bad. I did not see anything labeled on the 5 quart jugs I have stating that (never checked the website). Thanks for the info Aurora40! Valvoline Max Life FAQs
