Getting ready for a road trip to Tennessee in a week. Oil life is at 10%. I found Quaker State Ultimate Durability full synthetic for $18/5 qt jug at Wally World.
Can anyone recommend this or steer me away from this product. I have never used QS. I've been a Kendall man for as long as I can remember.
Any filter recommendations to go along with it? Was gonna pick up a K&N oil filter, any thoughts?
Ant.

from what i understand about synthetics is that it is completely safe to switch to them and back off at any time and your good. i have never once used it but i think i'll splurge on some soon. the benefits of syn, you will pay more but you can go longer between changes on it. also the "normal" quart of oil these cars use between changes should go away, therefore the cost in the end is about the same or less since you get an extra thousand or two miles without adding a quart either. the 4.0 and pan holds a massive amount of oil for it's displacement,(7.5 with filter) so we're good for more than most cars. i copied this from the owners manual Your vehicle has an Engine Oil Life Monitor. This monitor will show you when to change the oil -- usually between 3,000 miles (5 000 km) and 7,500 miles (12 500 km) since your last oil change. Under severe conditions, the indicator may come on before 3,000 miles (5 000 km). Never drive your vehicle more than 7,500 miles (12 500 krn) or 12 months, (whichever occurs first), without an oil change. The system won’t detect dust in the oil. So if you drive in a dusty area be sure to change your oil every 3,000 miles (5 000 km) or sooner apparently it's ok to go 7,500 miles on the oil lol but honestly, i'm pretty sure your safe with any synthetic, i'm a castrol gtx guy turned valvoline. ;D even though i haven't used syn, i have used the k&n filter a few times. the wrench design is nice and the burst strength is out of site but i noticed they always tend to leak no matter what. just my experience, for the price of an oil change alone i thought it was pretty crummy. i did however re use them so when i changed oil i would drain & reuse the filter once. with new oil it did fine, as i checked used oil in the light for metal. particle filtration is really good with the k&n but leaking is unacceptable. i won't use them again.

I have only ever seen one engine that had quaker state ran through it dismantled, it was not pretty. It was not the synthetic but this engine had sludge out its rear end. I mean NASTY it was an LT1 out of a roadmaster that had been meticulously cared for by an older gentleman. made it 170k using just QS. I speak very highly of valvoline synthetic, Mobil one is a superior product also. I have heard bad things about QS and have seen first hand that its not fun. Not knowing much about their snthetic though doesnt help. Personally I suggest valvoline. cheap and good stuff

This is a photo of my old Iron Duke 2.5 at 292,000 miles when I changed the valve cover gasket a few months ago. The engine has never had anything but conventional oil in it at regular 3,000 mile changes. Notice that the sludge is OUTSIDE the engine, not inside. Oil life monitor at 10% - OUCH!!!! Even though we have LOTS of oil in the crankcase, 10% is tempting fate. I change before 50% which works out to between 4,000 and 5,000 miles with my driving. That's pushing it far enough to suit me.

I don't think a 10% reading is dangerous to any extent. I mean the system is designed to measure exactly when you should change the oil, and that would be at 0%. Plus, the oil life monitoring system can't tell you are using synthetic (if you switch) so the change recommendations are based on the engine thinking it has conventional oil in it. I use Mobil1 Extended Performance which is rated to last 15,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.
I'm sure the Quaker State synthetic is a perfectly acceptable product. It's a major brand of oil that has been on the market for decades. aura1's account really doesn't apply since it was a completely different type of oil. And there are numerous accounts I've read of elderly folks who take real good care of engines on the maintenance end, but almost never run them at WOT to burn out carbon buildup. So that kind of sludge can accumulate regardless of the type of oil used, if the engine is under-driven.

I ended up going with the Castrol and a K & N filter..cost was around $50 and did the change myself.

That is exactly right! Believe it or not, it really does help the engine when WOT is utilized regularly. I'm saying maybe once every couple days, not once every couple minutes.
