Transmission code p0741 means "Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance Stuck Off". Can anyone tell what this means and what would be a course of action to fix. Problem is on a 1998 aurora. Thanks

The first thing my manual says is to check the transmission fluid level and if that's OK inspect the transmission lines to the radiator to see if they are pinched plugged or twisted. After that it gets complicated - you need a scan tool to check the slip speed. It gives possible problems if the slip speed is wrong. Control Valve stuck off due to sediment or binding, regulator valve ditto, TCC feed valve ditto, oil pressure screen clogged, TCC sol valve o-ring cut or leaking, turbine shaft seals worn or cut, the torque converter may be ballooning. Then it says to repair or replace any malfunctioning component. good luck.

I just had the oil changed on a 99 that I purchased with 127, 000 miles and after the oil change I got the check engine idiot light. I also am getting a P0741 code.
Is there something that may have been done wrong on the oil change (overfilling etc.) that would cause this code?
Oil pressure is great, no slippage on tranny, shifts through the gears smoothly and no idle problems.
Thanks in advance....
Jim

Hi Jim
I still haven't got the bottom of my SES PO741 problem. I have changed the transmission fluid and filters. I found some small steel o rings in the old fluid (approx 1/4 inch diameter), not sure these are related. Just finished a 700 mile trip with the car, which drives and shifts just fine. Sometimes the SES light will reset on its own, but will reappear after the third or fourth trip of using the vehicle. Pulling the appropriate fuse also resets the SES light for again three or four trips. My strategy at the moment is to wait and see until something changes with the driveability/shifting of the vehicle. If anyone has any ideas on what the small steel rings might be, I would appreciate any comments.
Thanks
Basil

glad to hear its better with the fluid change. im having mine changed friday after 78k without one and a LOT of rough driving since i bought the car. might wanna take a look at this, just for fun or serious: www.domesticperformance.com/product_info.php?products_id=258hopefully my tranny will never break but if it does, im getting this along with the optional limited slip that lets you burn out both wheels

Thank you for your help! I am not sure if the techician reset the oil life indicator. I had a fellow at Midas reset the diagnostic monitor and the problem has not recurred. I think that I may have induced the PO741 message by didling with the tranny controls while the oil was being changed. I think this was just a false message in this case. I have ordered a shop manual for the car but it has not arrived yet. What is the procedure for resetting the diagnostic codes on an Aurora? I am really happy with the Aurora so far but I am even more happy with the great response from this forum. Thank you once again for your help! Jim TEXT

Disconnect the negative battery cable (under the back seat) for about 30 seconds or so. I believe that will do it.

Or you can get a nice cheap OBD2 scanner and clear the code. Also, Autozone used to do it for free in NJ, but sadly no longer since the new mv inspection.

Speaking of tranny slippage. When I put my Aurora in gear, every once in a while, it would get into gear awefully hard. It does it in either forward or reverse. Again, it doesn't do it all the time, but just sometimes. Could it be torque converter related (being that I don't know much about it)? Has anyone else experienced this problem? I had a transmission replacement, from a dealer, about 2 years ago to the tune around $4,000 hard earned US dollars , and I most certainly don't want to do that again (probably won't). By the way, I'm up to date on new tranny fluid, flush & filter. Please reply; this activity makes me uneasy

My PO741 code reset itself after a few hours on the road at 80+mph.
Is it possible this is just a sticky sensor on tranny?
