Does anyone have the factory shop manual for a 1996 I need to know if the Serpentine belt tensioner and pulley can be replaced without removing the engine. Thanks in advance

I just had mine replaced on my "95", and the mechanic said that the engine had to be lifted. The original part was plastic which I broke when my surpentine belt popped. The replacement part that I got from the dealer was made of metal. My intensions was to replace it myself (I'm a DIY), but was too much for me to handle. I never pulled an engine up before.

Hi Moe2244 Thank you for answering my question. I have since had mine done by a mechanic when my A/C was replaced. He said that it was quite a tricky job and hoped he never had to do another. How long did your mechanic take? mine took two hours. Thankyou again.

Not sure how long it took him, but I also had my alternator replaced that same day. I put an OEM replacement on myself a few years back (I'll never go the cheaper route again - esp. under the hood; with this car stick with AC Delco). So the mechanic changed my tensioner and alternator, all for $430.50.

It never took me more than 45mis to replace a serpentine belt - then again I never changed a belt on the Aurora. Lift the engine? Sounds like someone's pulling on your chain...Unless of course there is an engine mount right in the middle of the belt loop. Is there?

Heh, yeah, i also thought, "how could you not change your own serpentine belt" then i looked at it, lol, its pretty compact in there as well as tons of mounts and brackets being in the way. luckelly mine was replaced before i bought my car (or so i was told, it did look fairly new).

My mom's Nissan Altima required the removal of the passanger side wheel well cover but it was easy and I changed both belts in under 30 mins.

My apology. When I said belt tensioner pulley, I should have said "Idler Pulley", which needed the engine lifted. In regards to the surpentine belt, it's a little difficult trying to replace it by looking at it. However, it's a no brainer when you use the diagram shown in the little owners manual, located in the glove box. You all still have this book right? Sorry for the mix up; good conversation though.

Moe, no need to apologize.
One part is referred to as the belt tensioner and the other as a Pulley or an Idler Pulley. I guess my first post was a bit vague and may have bin misconscrewed. I did mean both. kobalt rather than jack the engine up by the oil pan I think the mechanic did use a chain, but not mine. j/k ;D
FYI The idler pulley is held in place by a rather long screw.
