Anyone had this problem?? The brake light comes on with an error message I believe re: Brake Fluid - but the brake fluid was checked it was near full, but a hose was disconnected so it was reattached and the brakes don’t work. Once the hose was reattached and more brake fluid was added the brakes worked slightly but the petal has to be almost all the way down to the floor.
Also this happened suddenly with no warning - went to start it up and move the car so it could be plowed around...

Check the brake lines, sounds like what happened to me. The brake line from the master cylinder has a braid in it. It may be leaking from the braid. If that the case you need to replace that brake line (its a PITA to change...trust me) and you may need a new master cylinder now. Once the line is fixed, the pedal wont feel the same til the master cylinder is changed. Hopefully it wont be as extensive as what happened to me, but it sounds similiar. I was on the roll tho...scary stuff

is it an expensive fix?

when you disconnect or open a brake line you must bleed all the brakes. If not, the brakes will work barely, or not at all. Air compresses. Fluid does not.

The brake line itself was cheap, but its labour intensive, that was not cheap. If you can do it yourself, then its a cheap fix. I'm sure you can get a new master cylinder from RockAuto or something for much less then from the General.

Brake bleeding is not expensive. All that has to be done is to attach a pressure bleeder to the master cylinder, open the bleeder screw at each wheel caliper, and allow the aerated brake fluid to be forced out, while adding fresh brake fluid as necessary. ___________________ GM!!! So what hose exactly came off of the master cylinder? If it's a brake line, you may seriously want to investigate why it came off, that's not a normal thing. Was brake fluid coming out of that area? I'd be worried about contamination in the brake line and would flush it very thoroughly (which will also purge the air).
As Jim said, you may also need to replace more than that. Understanding why it fell apart is key and should help you decide what things absolutely need replacing. You don't want it to fall off again while you are driving along!

That braided portion of the line must be a weak point, I saw the line when it came off and it was very twisty

My mom is currently driving the car since I now have it as my 2nd car. So I am not sure what hose came off although she did say it seemed to be losing Brake fluid – just slightly.

I wonder why they'd use braided line off the master cylinder anyway? I've never seen anything but steel lines until you reach the suspension. Is the master cylinder mounted on the engine or something? Usually flex line is only needed when something might move around a bit. My mom is currently driving the car since I now have it as my 2nd car. So I am not sure what hose came off although she did say it seemed to be losing Brake fluid – just slightly. Ha ha, nice! You sent your mom out in it! Remind me to be suspicious if you ever ask me to start your car for you. What is your 1st car now?

The way the line was explained to me, was as follows. Stainless steel brake line that leads from the master cylinder to the ABS controller, not to be mistaken with the ETCBM.
IIRC there are stainless steel lines that come out of the bottom of the master cylinder, and like most its attached to the firewall not the engine.
*lemme go have a look*

OK, you can see the braid in the stainless steel line right underneath the coolant overflow tank, the braid is quite long. The line snakes up to the bottom of the brake fluid reservior, that whole thing on my car is brand new replaced last spring after I sprung a leak in the braided portion of the line.

Well my mom has had the car now for about 2 months so she was the one who detected the brake problems – I’m not that bad – I wouldn’t just send my own mother out in a car that had a brake issue…Others maybe… LoL
Well… my primary car right now is an ’01 Limited edition Lincoln Continental (my black mob car…)

Well… my primary car right now is an ’01 Limited edition Lincoln Continental (my black mob car…) Couldn't find any '01 4.0s? Seriously, I like the Conti. It was one of the only stylish Lincolns, and the 285 horse 4.6 demolishes the 252 horse 3.9 in the LS (at the time). I also like the Mark VIII, but I liked the first iteration more. The refreshed look wasn't as sharp to my eye. And of course they killed both of those cars...

Yep they did… although we seem to have a growing collection of them LoL 94 and 98 Marks and my 01Conti I’m still looking for a 500

***ANSWER*** Well it ended up being a rotted out brake line... and 150 later my cars is running as fabulous as usual (lay off the jokes Jim!) -A This is the line to the wheel? Or a line from the master cylinder? Did you replace all of them, or just the one that went bad?
