Proboards most likely does this with all their forums, backing up a certain number of them each day during the overnight hours when usage is at its lowest and will interrupt the fewest amount of users.
Their backups probably go pretty quick since we host all our own photos and other media. The only thing there is to back up in our case is a few thousands threads full of text, and the tiny Proboards icon images.
